Overturf and I started for our claims. Went to Eugene and |
bought a horse and buggies and started for Silver Lake in the |
afternoon of the 16. |
Thursday, September 17, 1903 |
Got up the Willamette River 40 miles from any blacksmith |
shop and broke a wheel. I camped on an island with the |
horse while he walked back to Eugene & got a new wheel. |
Got started again the 19. |

Got to Silver Lake at 3 P.M. and Sept. 34 we got on to my |
claim and I did my first work on it. |
Sunday, September 27, 1903 |
Our horse got away from us. Was gone for over two weeks |
and Overturf spent nearly five days hunting her. |
Monday, September 28, 1903 |
We laid the foundation of the cabin. Alone tonight. |
Thursday, October 01, 1903 |
Moved our stuff onto the claim. Had to haul the logs |
ourselves. The first night to sleep on the claim. |
Sunday, October 04, 1903 |
We hired a team and started for Overturf's claim. Rainy |
stormy and cold. Camped on the desert under a Juniper tree. |
No water except what we had in the canteen. Broke the ax |
handle "such luck" |
Monday, October 05, 1903 |
Got to Sand Springs. Camped in an old cabin. Wind blew |
terrible and got very cold - cooked a porcupine but it was not |
good. |
Tuesday, October 06, 1903 |
Got on to Overturf's claim. Done a little work but had to go |
back to Sand Springs in the evening for water 12 miles |
through the woods. |
