Why had I postponed my departure? I should have left before dark to start home.
In the fields on both sides of the dusty lane the rounded heads of the pumpkins were silvered in the moonlight. The wind put a chill in my spine and a cloud in front of the moon, and sudden darkness had me stumbling to a stop, heart pounding as I peered into the ink black for any sign of my homeward trail. Then a strange glow undertook each pumpkin and in startled fear I saw the whole patch leering at me!
My path obvious now in it's lack of that lurid grin, my feet commenced to running and I quickly took my leave!
