If you don't know who Mara is, I can give you a brief discription.
Most of the pages I link to have a much better description of her
and her history, character design, etc. She was a Dark Jedi
trained by the Emperor himself designed to carry out his wishes
without anyone else knowing who she was. It has been hinted at
that she was not the only "Emperor's Hand" however, she did not
find this out until after the Emperor's death. She was given a
last mission by the Emperor, to kill Luke Skywalker. Until this
wish of the Emperor becomes all consuming, 
he still has much
power over her even after his death (but somehow only in this
one area) she goes out in the world and makes a somewhat decent life for herself
as a smuggler. She is tempted to kill him several times but
more pressing situations prevail and eventually, Luke and Mara become friends, cause
obviously she can't kill him (since he is the main characer)
and she's too interesting of a
character for Zahn to decide to kill off. Now, in the later books
which I normally refuse to acknowledge, she is trained a little
by Luke in the Force, so obviously she did not remain a Dark Jedi.
Yet, she remains distinctly caustic and all around fun.
