TO MY

POETRY
SOLARIUM

Lord,Lord

Why did You make me Black?
Why did you make someone
the world wants to hold back?
Black is the color of dirty clothes
The color of grimy hands & feet
Black is the color of tire beaten streets
Why did You give me thick lips
A broad nose & kinky hair?
Why did You make someone
Who receives the hatred stare?
Black is the color of the bruised eye
when someone gets hurt
Black is the color of darkness
Black is the color of dirt
How come my bone structure's so thick?
My hips and cheeks so high?
How come my eyes are brown
and not the color of daylight sky?
Why do people think I'm useless?
How come I feel so used?
Why do some people see my skin
and think that I should be abused?
Lord I just don't understand
What is it about my skin?
Why do some poeple want to hate me
and not know the person within?
Black is what people are "listed"
when others want to keep them away
Black is the color of shadows cast
Black is the end of the day
Lord you know my own people mistreat me
and I know this just ain't right
They don't like my hair
They say I'm too dark or too light
Lord don't You think it's time
for You to make a change?
Why don't You re-do creation
and make everyone just the same?

Why did I make you Black?
Get off your knees and look around
Tell me what do you see?
I didn't make you in the image of darkness
I made you in the image of ME!
I made you the color of coal
from which beautiful diamonds are formed
I made you the color of oil
the black gold that keeps people warm
I made you from the rich, dark earth
that can grow the food you need
Your color's the same as the black stallion
a majestic animal is he
I didn't make you in the image of darkness
I made you in the image of ME!
All the colors of the heavenly rainbow
can be found throughout every nation
But when all of those colors were blended
you became my greatest creation
Your hair is the texture of lambs wool
Such a humble little creature is he
I am the Shepherd who watches them
I am the One who will watch over thee
You are the color of midnight sky
I put the stars glitter in your eyes
There is a smile hidden behind your pain
That's why your cheeks are so high
You are the color of dark clouds formed
when I send my strongest weather
I made your lips full
so when you kiss the one that you love
they will remember
Your stature is strong
your bone structure thick
to withstand the burden of time
The reflection you see in the mirror
The image that looks back is MINE

What Good

What good is a flower
if it can't bloom?
What good is expansion
if you have no room?
What good is a twig
if it can't sprout?
What good is a voice
if it can't shout?
What good is life
if you can't be free?
And what good am
I if I can't be me?

NO APOLOGIES

I make no apologies
for this love I feel for you...
I make no apologies
for the dreams I have of you..
I make no apologies
for the thoughts I have of you..
I make no apologies
for what I hope would be..
I make no apologies
for what I know won't be..
I make no apologies
for the hope of you and me..
I make no apologies......

CAN YOU

As I awake from my slumber,
my lips speak your name...

Can You Hear Me?

As I go through my morning ritual
I glance at the clock
and close my eyes
your face dance before me....

Can You See Me?

I go through the motions
of gettting dress
and again
my lips speak your name...

Can You Hear Me?

I pick up my keys
and walk to the door.
my lips touch your cheek
as gently a tear falls...

Can You Feel Me?

Black Woman

As Black Women, we must learn
to understand, appreciate
and value ourselves....
We must be valued
affirmed and loved....
Institutiions and traditions
have taught us
that we must be in
a relationship to be complete....
Discard...
What you have been
taught about your worth...
Discover
The Art...and the joy...
of being with yourself....
If we find ourself
not being ourself because
He cant handle our truth
we are not being affirmed...
If we are continually.
trying to heal our wounds
because of his assualts
his inconsiderate words
and actions...
we are not being loved....
so often we lose sight
of how capable and courageous
we are....
We Must....
Take courage
and liberate ourself
rejecting limiting thoughts
that undermine
our self-esteem and success....
Love, Wisdom, Strength, and Beauty.
are the very substance
of who we are....
We have the wisdom
courage and stamina to endure
to overcome and succeed....
Love is our source
and our substance dwelling within
the stillness of our heart
and in everything God created....
Pause....
Feel the Joy
of the Holy Spirit....

I DREAM

I dream and there you are
there are no words to describe
how you look
standing alone...
There is no light
but I see
clearly, perfectly
you appear so real

I've known you
forever, maybe more..
we've met often
I know all about you
mind and soul

Walking
towards me slowly
you call my name
you say, "I miss you"
I whisper, "I am here"

I can see your face
yet I cannot reach it
I can see your eyes
yet they look away

I whisper again, " I love you!"
you reply, " I do not exist
I cannot love,
I am not real"
your image fades
I wake and you are gone..

HEARTPRINTS

Whatever our hands touch---
We leave fingerprints!
On walls, on furniture
On doorknobs, dishes, books
As we touch we leave our identity.

Oh please where ever I go today
Help me leave heartprints!
Heartprints of compassion
Of understanding and love.
Heartprints of kindness
and genuine concern.

May my heart touch a lonely neighbor
Or a runaway daughter
Or an anxious mother
Or, perhaps, a dear friend!

I shall go out today
To leave heartprints
And if somone should say
"I felt your touch,"
May that one sense be...YOUR LOVE
Touching through ME...

ABSENCE OF LOVE

As I lay in my lonely bed at night
The beating of my heart
Echos the ticking of the clock....

The four walls surrounds me
As creaking of the house
Echos the lonliness I feel
From the absence of your love.....

Where once love lived
Which brought such hope
Now lives pain of a love now lost.

The joy of love
Can be so sweet
But when love is lost
The pain of love is not so sweet.....

We live for love
But not love to live
That when love is lost
Life is no longer so sweet.....
