I've been a fan of Sir Anthony Hopkins for many years....long before the role of Hannibal Lecter finally brought him to the attention of the American movie audiences. Yes, I did see "Shadowlands", "Howard's End", and "Remains of the Day", but I still think this is Hopkins at his very best. His Dr. Frederick Treves is played quietly, with intense concern not only for his patient, John Merrick, but for the condition of his soul. Has he helped the "Elephant Man" out of humanity or a desire for further his own medical career? "Am I a good man, or a bad man?" he asks his wife, tears shimmering in his eyes. |
