What's Wrong With These Guys?

Febuary 5, 1998
Afternoon

I mentioned in my Fairy Tale Love entry the other day that I had watched the special on CBS entitled "My Sergei". Well, this morning I saw mention of a 'review' of the show on my stock and news ticker that I run sometimes. I clicked the entry and went to read the review.

The reviewer had little positive to say about the show, but what really irritated me was that he (at least I think it was a male writing) called it smarmy and sappy and various synonyms. What's wrong with a story of love and loss? I don't see anything wrong with it! I think a little honest, positive emotion is far better than the violence and hatred we see so much of in the media. Maybe if we had a little more of the former, and less of the latter, the world would be a better place.

Some people might say that if that's all that the media has, people will turn it off. Well, that's a good thing in itself. People can use a break from it, and a chance to think for themselves. Even if they don't turn it off, violence, sex and foul language aren't the only things that sell. Why do you think Titanic is such a big box office hit? Romance and love stories sell as well as, or better than, violence. Okay, so Titanic had a little sex, someone giving someone else the finger (which I thought was rather unnecessary), and explosions and destruction), but it didn't have people blowing other people away with Uzis or bombs, or anything like that. I don't know individual film records, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's outsold things like the Die Hard, Terminator and Rambo films.
