A Couple Days Off

February 20, 1998

I did mean to write yesterday, but I had a battle with the computer, and when I was done, I was too tired to do much of anything.

Mom had asked one of the ladies from church if she'd mind taking me along when she went to Wal-Mart, so I got a call around 10am, asking if I'd like to go. I said yes, and got ready, and we did a little running around... Wal-mart, Burger King for lunch, and Dollar General. I got a new computer game and some foodstuffs at (Super) Wal-Mart, and some pens and a couple Reese's and a roll of cinnamon hard candies at the dollar store.

I got home, and decided I would do something I've been toying with for a while: I pulled the 420 MB hard drive out of my old computer (which was only getting used when this one wouldnt' work) and put it in the new one. With some major trial and error, and coming close to damaging the second HD controller a time or two, I managed to get the new drive, the old drive, and the CD-ROM all to be recognized.

There was just one little problem. My main drive is partitioned into two, C and D. The new drive got renamed D. That played heck with lots of shortcuts and registry entries and the like, and it wasn't til today that I got most everything sorted out. I'm sure there are still a few stray entries... the CD ROM and ZIP drives got bumped up a letter too, so I'm sure I'm going to pop in a disc sooner or later and Windows is gonna say "Huh?", but for the most part, things should work.

I'm proud of myself... I redid the cabling inside the computer so it's not such a mess, got the second controller running, drives reconfigured as proper slaves and masters, and defragmented all my drives. I was busy! And finally, I was able to install my game, but by time I had some time to myself, I was too tired to play it. *chuckle* It was still waiting for me this morning, after Sam was gone to class. *grin*

Today, I did a few more practical things, like dishes, cleaning cat bowls and giving them all fresh food and water, and even managed three loads of laundry... washed, folded and put away for the most part.

This evening, I watched all of the televised women's figure skating, even though Tom Brokaw had already ruined the surprise for me by announcing that Tara Lipinsky won the gold on the evening news. Spoilsport! I got annoyed at CBS for not sticking to one event at a time. They're as bad as me! I didn't mind the speed skating, what little they showed of it, but I spent most of the bobsled runs working on laundry. I came to watch figure skating, not the art of bobsled-making. Oh well.

Jevim and I played some backgammon this evening, and I played fetch with my cat, who has a knack for knowing when I'm busy chatting or playing with Jevim. I think she must be jealous! Still, I played with her for quite a while, mostly during the skating, and now she's asleep on the floor, with her doily-frisbee laying beside her. I'd scoop her up into bed with me, but I know she wouldn't stay. *sigh* Ah, well, such is life. I'm tired, and going to crawl on off to bed. Maybe tomorrow I will remember to tell you about my fun time with McGlen Micro.
