ARGH!!!

January 31, 1998

Just as it looked like the new generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) were going to go into effect, and just as I was beginning to think the president was doing a good job, he steps in and throws everything the people at CORE have been working on into the garbage.

I was hoping to register my own domain name under the new .WEB heirarchy, but if Clinton's plan wins out over CORE's, it may be ages before I get to see that happen, and I may wind up paying as much as it would have cost to register with InterNIC. *sigh* I am not a happy camper at the moment.

Clinton wants this new plan to set up individual registrars for each new top level domain. That is, .web would be run by another mini-Internic and .shop by another (assuming that those names are chosen as gTLDs in the first place) and it sounds to me like this will lead to higher pricing, instead of the competitive pricing that CORE's plan of distributing the new gTLDs among the many (hundreds, thousands?) registrars that have already been selected by their plan.

Only time will tell, at this point, what is going to happen, but I, for one, am not happy with the president's attempt to take over what should be a global decision (CORE is based in Geneva, Switzerland; with Clinton's plan, things would be run by a corporation here in the US).

Hmm, I was poking around and noticed there is a registrar giving out .web domain names, but they are not part of the big plan, and I don't want to sign up with them, then have to sign up with someone else later, so for now, it's the waiting game.
