Crystallization

Wednesday, May 13, 1998. 2 PM

I finished reading Elizabeth Hand's Glimmering just a bit ago. Not a bad novel, I guess, but I really don't care much for doom and gloom type stuff; I think we get exposed to enough of that through the news medai these days. I'd much rather read something where some of mankind's problems are solved, rather than something about the end of life as we know it.

I guess that's why I prefer Fantasy to Science Fiction. Or SF set in some other world: one we haven't polluted and defaced so much as the one we're in. And once we're there, to be smart enough not to make the same mistakes all over. No guns, no pollution, no murder or rape. Given another chance, could we do it? To be honest, I doubt it; I think it's mankind's nature to cause chaos; but it's nice to dream.

I'm just sitting out here on the front porch (we don't have a back one, but that's beside the point), enjoying the day and letting thoughts tumble in my head: vague ideas for a story, or at least a world upon which to build a story. For now, there are no plots and no characters, but perhaps something will click into place if I let it simmer on the back of my mind for a while.

An image just came to mind... something from high school chemistry. There was an experiment we did involving solubility: We heated a beaker of water, stirred in as much sugar as would dissolve in the given amount, and then let the sugar solution cool. When the time was right, we dropped in another grain of sugar, and like magic, everything began to crystallize. That's what this idea for a story feels like, right now... a solution waiting for that last grain.

It's so nice sitting out here on the porch. So why do I want to go in and play games on the computer? Beats me. Here I go...
