Hague-Nice-Rome-O-Gram - 29 June 2001

Hi everyone,

Work has been dominating my life way too much, these days. Aside from work and stress, life is pretty good though, I must say. I've joined a ferret club, and have hopes of acquiring a couple of little furry bags of clownish destruction to liven up my apartment. Life just isn't the same without pets, and I haven't had any for two years!

It's a really exciting and historic day today here in the Hague, because last night Slobodan Milosevic was handed over to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Some of you may recall that this is where my boyfriend, Jurjen, works; he is in the team of clerks who process witness statements and evidence documents, builds indexes for them, and then burns CD-ROMs for the teams of lawyers. He originally had a job that involved reading through witness statements - extremely depressing, reading all day about cruelty and violence. Jurjen is a small cog in the large machine of the ICTY, and it can be frustrating work as the whole organization is flying by the seat of their pants, but he has always believed in what they are doing there, and today is the largest and most validating event they've ever had. They are jubilant, but also they have to buckle down, because the prosecution of Milosevic for his war crimes is a huge task. Plus that, there's the current violence in Macedonia...unfortunately, prosecuting war crimes is a growth industry.

I'm sure the story is on CNN.com, but here's the ICTY site itself: http://www.un.org/icty/

I've been in Nice this week on business; I will be working on a project for a couple of weeks that I will develop in Nice and then install in Rome. So hopefully I'll have some nice pictures of Rome to put up shortly. These days, I'd rather stay home, after two years of traveling but if I have to go somewhere, I'm glad it's Rome - in all this time I've never made it to Italy. Finally!!

I hope this finds you all well. And if you haven't seen them, check out the photos from Abu Dhabi:
