First of all, people have to take responsibility for their actions. I have seen it, and I imagine you have seen it, too. People ahead of you in the supermarket line buying all sorts of things food stamps should not be buying while the children tagging along look underfed and uncared for. Breaks my heart. Go without cigarettes?! Beer?! I know . . . I must be crazy. Priorities, you know. Exactly! Priorities! Children are going without because their parents are irresponsible. Are we going to continue to make the children suffer because of the parents? Children are God's way of telling us life should go on. They are the adults of tomorrow who will also be standing in that line at the supermarket. Make a difference in their lives - not directly but indirectly, if you like.
Get involved in your school lunch programs and develop them to include free lunch programs for the disadvantaged, to include breakfast in their meal programs, etc. Those hungry children will at least get two meals a day instead of maybe one. Maybe they will have something to look forward to when they get up in the morning.
Contribute to your local soup kitchens. We all have things in our cupboard we can donate. Cut back on one meal a week for your family in order to help feed another. You will be surprised at how rewarding and filling that meal is knowing that somewhere someone else is not going to bed hungry that day. Local churches can help out. Buy a small bag of groceries enough for a good meal, take it to your church, and have them deliver it anonymously to a needy family. Be creative. You'll be surprised at how many ways you can help beat hunger in this country.
Hope is what it's all about . . . in all things there is hope. Be another's hope for a better tomorrow.
