endometriosis index: other endo sites

This section is where I have placed any site that does not fit in any other category. As a result, it is a bit cluttered. Perhaps someday it will be better organized.

I have made more annotations here than in any other category to better explain what is offered by these resources. I have also made my own comments about some statements contained in some sites; you are certainly free to disagree with me. Since there are so many unknowns about endo, you may read conflicting info at some of these sites. However, I will point out ideas with which I personally disagree based on my own personal research. I am almost finished with investigating each site's content.

Endometriosis by MJ Bovo
Differences between endo and adenomyosis; symptoms of endo; other general info

Endometriosis -- Ask Alice at Columbia University
A great endo reference which discusses the physical and emotional toll endo takes on women; exposes the myths of endo; dietary recommendations; more

Endometriosis -- Fertilitext
Explores causes; treatments; effects of endo; more

Every Body: NZ's Health Information -- Endometriosis Info provided by New Zealand Endometriosis Foundation; I received a 404 error message when I tried to access this site on 3/24/98

Endocrinology and Endometriosis
General info; also discusses endocrine treatments, a.k.a. hormone treatments

Excerpt from "Menstrual Health & Endometriosis Kit" produced by Hobart Women's Health Centre
Excellent description of menstrual cycle and the role of hormones; general endo info; exposes the myth of endo as a "career woman's" disease

Endometriosis/Endometrioma info from U. Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio
Scroll down the page to get to the endo info, which includes a short clinical explanation of the disease; also describes finding endometriomas through ultrasound and MRI

Johns Hopkins Health Info on Endo
General info; includes a more comprehensive list of symptoms than many sites; discussion of treatment, including pain management tips

A Practical Guide to the Management of Infertility -- Chapter 8, Endometriosis
An extensive look at endo, including symptoms, medications, and surgery; includes a good explanation of surgical terms

An interesting page which gives more detailed info on theories on causes of endo and tissue reaction to endo than most pages do; also includes short glossary

Endometriosis -- from MedicineNet
Overall this is a good explanation of endo and related issues. However, there are a couple of points I had to note. This site states that "most women with endometriosis have no symptoms." I'd say that is debatable. A better wording would be "some women" instead of "most." Also, it says that "surgery can be an effective treatment for women with moderate to severe endometriosis." While that is true, it is also true for women with minimal to mild endo, as recent studies indicate.

Endometriosis Info from the Gynecological Health Center
"Endometriosis most often affects women in their 30s and 40s" -- quote from this site. This does not suggest the "career woman" myth, but I am not sure if those age ranges are agreed upon by endo experts as the "most likely age to have endo." Perhaps this is suggesting that many women are diagnosed at these ages, as many women go undiagnosed for years.

What is endometriosis?
A good FAQ from the producers of Waiting for a Cure, a documentary in the making about endo

What Is Endometriosis? (different page, same name)
A good overall FAQ on endo; includes a more extensive list of symptoms than many sites. Although natural progesterone can be purchased through this site, it seems to offer honest advice and information on natural progesterone, as seen in these statements: " The monthly discomfort may not disappear entirely but in some cases becomes more tolerable. Natural Progesterone may not work for all who suffer from Endometriosis and many Doctors have different opinions on this subject."
Please keep in mind I am not endorsing this site, as explained in my disclaimer.

Endometriosis
"Endometriosis can only occur after menstruation begins in a woman." Studies exist to refute this statement. Otherwise, this article seems OK.

Endometriosis from PlainSense.com
Very short endo FAQ

The Endometriosis Association says "No" to Animal Experiments

Endometriosis Web Ring

WellWeb -- Endometriosis
A good general discussion of endo; includes bibliographical references and further resources

Glossary of Terms Related to the Female Reproductive System
Includes endo-related terms

Endometriosis -- Nurs 669 - The Primary Care of Women - Module 7
Some good info here, but some points I disagree with. One such point is "Bone loss [from GnRH Agonists] reversible if stopped within 6 months of initiating therapy;" I have read conflicting info which states some bone loss is not reversible.

Information on Endometrosis
Info from The Physicians Handbook of Clinical Nutrition (1995 edition); written in a more clinical manner (i.e. more medical vocabulary) than many sites; has valid information that is not often included in other sites, so this is well worth reading

OBGYN.net -- Endometriosis -- Issues and Procedures in Women's Health

The Women's Health Network -- What Is Endometriosis?
A general FAQ on endo; also sells a supplement

KK Web Server -- MedWeb -- Endometriosis
General info on endo; mentions as a symptom "[pain that] radiate[s] down to the knee and [is] referred to the back," a symptom that some women with endo have, but unfortunately it is not mentioned often in many endo FAQs

Two paragraphs on endo at the end of the page

Comprehensive Review of Endometriosis -- a CD ROM product

Barnard/Columbia's Women's Handbook -- includes endo info

Questions and Answers about Estrogen: The Natural Way by Nina Shandler

Medical Self-Care -- HealthWorld Online -- Endometriosis

Endometriosis by Allegra Clement-Bayard & Megan Wolpert -- Chapter 6, Women's Medicine, Section B: Not Cancer but Just As Serious -- Part of the Kenyon College Students for Students Handbook

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine
Also includes info on Lupron

Living with endometriosis -- Well Close Square patient advice leaflet
"Endometriosis is very commonly found by doctors when examining the pelvis or performing surgery." -- quote from this site. My comment: performing surgery, yes; examining the pelvic area, no. This site may be a bit dated in that it states "Newer treatments such as laparoscopic treatment with a laser to the endometriosis are becoming available now..." However, it does list some useful organizations in England.
