AFRICAMUSE'S LINK OF THE MONTHStarting October 1998, I will be selecting a regular "link of the month". This could be anything from a personal page to a search engine, in other words any site that I found particularly touching, entertaining or informative. I do tend to favour personal pages because I can relate to the effort and the hours that one person puts in to creating a really good site - and I enjoy so much the feeling of touching the soul of another person on this vast web of voices.Note (4 November 2002): What can I say? Life got in the way! My "Link of the Month" is no longer a monthly affair - but I do hope to get it going again soon!

LINK OF THE MONTH: NOVEMBER 2000THE VIRTUAL INCA TRAILAn excellent site on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu: I am hoping to walk the last part of this trail as a 'rite of passage' to mark my thirtieth birthday. There are plenty of very good personal sites on this topic, but this has to be one of the best. The travel-writing is good, the FAQ section is very thorough, the entire site is characterised by subtle humour, and the photographs are breathtaking. A really excellent resource, which has answered almost all of my questions, and served to further whet my appetite!
PAST LINKS OF THE MONTHOctober 2000Journeywoman.comThis site is an excellent resource for female travellers - from travel writing competitions to personal anecdotes to travel tips to classified sections. Everything from what to wear to how to feel safe. I am extremely pleased to have stumbled across this site!
Due to very restricted internet access between March 1999 and September 2000, I was unable to maintain my monthly selection. Now, in October 2000, I have arrived back in South Africa after a great deal of travel - I hope to be able to keep up my monthly selection, but I still do not have my own net access. It is a user-friendly, thoroughly-researched collection of orginal materials and resources from the web. Easter Island is an incredible place, and I used this page to find out all about it before my own visit in June 1998.
January 1999Shasta's ShackShasta is deaf. This fundamental underlies her wonderful, positive website. The vast bulk of her site is committed to teaching visitors how to use sign language, making the world of the deaf easier, and opening up a whole new world to those that can hear, yet take the trouble to learn this form of communication. Her animated images make it very easy to see how to sign letters, numbers, and a large selection of words. I found the sheer bulk of work that she obviously had to put into this site inspiring, and her willingness to invest this in the learning of others admirable.
December 1998The Quill and the BrushA beautifully-crafted bilingual site, in English and French. This site is a peaceful and spiritual one, with paintings, musings and tales. My favourite part of the site is The Map Room, where Alpaca has collected traditions and names from all over the world in an interactive format.
November 1998Athena Survivor's AnthologyA place of healing through creative expression I have been a frequent visitor to this site in the last four months. I truly have found the page to be a place of healing, although only when taken in small doses. As with all pages dealing with abuse, make sure you feel comfortable and safe before you start to read the writings collected in this anthology. One of the things I most like about this site is the sense of community and sharing of strength.
October 1998Knowing is MORE than half the battleA really thoughtful site about life as a military spouse...a story of strength. I very much like the down-to-earth writing style. Although I do not have the experience of sharing my life with someone in the military, I could relate to many of the author's emotions.
