Regimental History

On July 10, 1861, The 6th South Carolina Infantry was ordered from Columbia, South Carolina, to Richmond, Virginia. It remained in Richmond and was ordered to join the Confederate Army of the Potomac, arriving at the battlefield of Bull Run (Manassas) only hours after the fighting ended on July 21, 1861. The 6th served in the Army of the Potomac until 1862. Later, the 6th was absorbed into the Army of Northern Virginia. Then the unit served briefly in the Department of Richmond before returning to the Army of Northern Virginia. The unit, as part of Longstreet's Corps, moved to Georgia in the summer of 1863 and served in the Army of Tennessee and later in the department of East Tennessee. In the spring of 1864, the regiment returned to the service of the Army of Northern Virginia until the end of the war.
