to
the romantic world of
J.W.
Waterhouse
John
William Waterhouse lived from 1849 - 1917. He painted
many
Roman and mythical scenes as well as contemporary
in
his period of the Victorian era.
He
was heavily influenced by the 'Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood'
which
is reflected by his photograph-like paintings of mythical
and
historical characters and scenes.
Waterhouse
used a number of nearly identical looking models.
The
only one he ever identified was Muriel Foster (who
modelled
for both of the paintings below, she is both of the
musicians
in 'St Cecilia') The other model in these works is
unknown.
He used another lovely lady named Beatrice Flaxman
for
many paintings. (She is the model for 'I Am Half Sick of
Shadows',
the last of his 'Lady of Shalott' series. The model for
the
1888 painting of this name is reputedly his sister-in-law,
Mary,
and the unknown model above posed for the 1894
version.
These works are all on my 'Lady of Shalott Page')
My
gratitude to Jennifer Flora for the above information.
Waterhouse's
works may be found all over the 'net on
many
people's pages, and prints of Waterhouse are now very
popular
for hanging on household walls. The paintings below are
a
little lesser known, but I'm sure you'll spot some you know on
Carol
Gerten-Jacksons
enormous
art page, on which he features.
