September 30th - New Jersey and Lake Lucerne NY

Leaving Toms River today, for Totowa NJ and a visit with Sr. Clare Mary enroute to Canada. It's hard to believe we have been friends since the 1950's! And here we are, both getting better with age.

There is a special "sacredness" in "old friends"....those people who love us enough to write and keep in contact. They are irreplaceable, and scarce in our highly mobile and frantically rushed society. They are a gift from God.

Clare remarked that a friend of hers who works in a poor Country was visiting recently. When asked what difference he noticed most in being back in North America, he said it was the garbage. Where he is, nothing is thrown away; everything is used.

Back on the road after too short a visit. I'm finding a sadness in leaving family and friends again. These are the people who bridge my past and my present.

As I drive along, I notice the "garbage". We live in a society based on an economy of things wearing out quickly so we can buy more things. So we have "disposable" diapers, "disposable" razors, "disposable" cups and plates, "disposable" cameras, "disposable" lighters, etc. etc. etc. And we have "disposable" people - those who don't fit into society's expectations, or who are sacrificed for society's greed or fears.

Theo from Womenchurch was among those who offered me accommodation and her place is on my way north. I wish I could visit everyone! My "snaps" didn't turn out too well....hands aren't rock steady anymore and pictures are blurred. But Michael is a "handsome self" and of course, his picture came out just fine! It's a "cat" thing I think!
