"Me" at Azalea Trails
It was 1979 when I first went to Girl Scout camp. I headed off to Azalea Trails to the horse riding unit. In 1984 I was a Counselor-in-Training. I was a counselor in 1985 and 1986. In 1987 and '88 I was a unit leader. In 1989 I played the role of Arts and Crafts Director. My last summer at camp was 1992, when I was the camp director. Unfortunately for me, I had to grow up after that and haven't worked at camp since.
In my heart, though, I've never truly left the magic of Azalea Trails.
Here I sit on my bed in Distant Pines. The year is 1979. I wonder how I ever slept on that slope!
When the summer of 1989 ended, I thought I'd never return to camp. It was tradition to paint a message on the wall of the staff loft on such occasions. So I did. Unfortunately, since that time, the loft was remodeled and all the years of drawings and poetry were painted over. The last time I was there, the loft was a stark white place. What a shame.
