Karen Carpenter, I knew her because of her music. She had a wonderful voice.
Her song Close to You will always be one of my favourites.
When she died I found it very hard to understand why someone would want to strave themself to death.
I did not understand ! I did not understand this terriable affliction that effect one in every 100 women.
An afflication that is 90 % associated with women.
Anorexia nervosa is characterized by a refusal to eat resulting from an intense fear of weight gain. People with this disease may make themselves vomit if they do eat. Three to eight percent of people with this disease die prematurely. Half of those who survive recover within six years.
Anorexia Nervosa is much more likely in females, in fact, ninety percent of the cases are found in females. The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders estimates that there are seven million females and one million males who are suffering from this disease. There is much more pressure on women by society to be thin, such as the way we praise all of the thin models on magazine covers. Many times, girls see themselves as thin until they hit puberty and their body changes. Their breasts and hips get fuller, and the girls see themselves as getting fat. Eighty-five percent of anorexics develop the disease between the ages of thirteen and twenty. Many of them see getting fat as a failure on their part, which seems to cause self doubt. They see self starvation as a way to feel in control, since they feel out of control of their bodies. They become obsessed with losing weight and begin to become isolated, to the point of losing most of their friends.
Anorexia Nervosa is a very serious disease, which can often lead to hospitalization. Once they begin to lose all of the weight, they are unable to stop and often still believe that they are fat. They deny that they are sick and often don't want to talk about their problem. If you or anyone you care about has anorexia nervosa, you need to face the problem and talk about it . Don't pretend that it doesn't exist. Once you or your friend has admitted that there is a problem, seek out help from parents, a teacher, or even a school counselor. If there is no one close to you that you can reach out to, please contact one of these national groups:
