The Power of Exercise |
|||
It is no secret that participation in an exercise program on a regular basis is an important aspect in everyday life. As we all know exercise can be used to control various health factors such as cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, and improving self esteem. Keeping the above in mind, how do you go about "sticking" to a program that will "stick" on you.
To be successful in any facet of life, you need to be able to look yourself in the mirror and say, "I am willing from this day forward to commit myself to a purpose that I feel will help me for many years to come". In other words, in order for you to take care of others, you must first be able to take care of yourself. If you cannot convince yourself to a 100% commitment to a purpose, then you are not ready for the task at hand. The above philosophy is no different when starting an exercise program. The reason for a 50% dropout rate in an exercise program is due to the fact that people are exercising because they feel they have to rather than exercising because they want to. Once you feel that you are ready to make a transformation of yourself, consider yourself halfway there.
It has been my experience that people who take part in exercise programs are more interested in its vanity rather than the benefits it has on cardiovascular disease, as well as improving pulmonary function. If that is what it takes to get you started in an exercise program, go for it. Each year, Americans spend millions of dollars on consumer products that will enhance their appearance. Cosmetics, clothes, sport cars, and cosmetic surgery are some of the products bought. If you feel that exercising will solely improve your appearance, you may then be able to adhere to a regular exercise program and all the other internal benefits will follow.
You have now made the commitment, now how do you get started? The first thing you need to do is develop a personal mission statement that will include your commitment to a healthier lifestyle. The personal mission statement will keep you on track when you feel that you are starting to slip. You should keep your personal mission statement in areas that can be seen on a regular basis to reinforce and also remind yourself of what you stand for and are trying to accomplish.
Another important aspect to sticking to an exercise program is enjoyment. Staying in compliance with your exercise program will greatly depend upon the type of activities you choose. Always remember that variety is the spice of life. The more you cross-train, the less likely you will become an exercise dropout.
