Map showing area Ed's ancestors were from.....
also from just over border in Devon county.
Tintagel, Cornwall
The birthplace of Ed 's great grandfather,
Edward Charles
Manicom & his 7 children.
Tintagel
On the north coast of Cornwall, strictly speaking the name of this village
is
TREVENA, with Tintagel referring only to the headland.
Perhaps it's best known for its castle ruins and
alleged connection
with the legendary King Arthur, although unfortunately little evidence
has been found to support this story.
The first castle was
built
in the middle of the 12th century
on the site of a Celtic monastery,
long after the time King Arthur was supposed to have lived.
The owner at this time was Reginald, Earl of Cornwall,
Henry I's
illegitimate son.
However, it does appear Tintagel was the home of
Cornish Royalty in the past and a place of some importance.
Here's a note from newspaper headlines re: ARTHURIAN DISCOVERY--1998
"CORNWALL FIND MAY PROVE ARTHUR LEGEND, TINTAGEL, ENGLAND (CP)"
The first tangible evidence that the legendary King Arthur may really
have existed has been found in the ruins of Tintagel castle in Cornwall.
The find at Tintagel, considered one of the Arthurian "sites",
is a piece of slate dating from the sixth century,
marked with a Latin inscription which translates as:
"Artognou, father of a descendent of Coll, has made this."
The name, pronounced Arthnou, is similar to Arthur and may refer to the
legendary King of Britain, says the British Tourist Authority.
The only 20th-century building dedicated to Arthur is also at Tintagel.
King Arthur's Great Halls was built in 1933 of Cornish granite
by millionaire Frederick Glasscock.
It was built with 73 stained-glass windows with Arthurian themes
and contains a granite throne and round tables.
A narrated light show tells the story of Arthur from his birth to final battle.
The Great Halls and Tintagel Castle are both open daily.

Trebrea Inn...Tintagel
Trebrea Lodge overlooks the beauty and grandeur of the North Cornish
coast
and is set in 4 acres of wooded hillside.
This Grade II listed house (now a wonderful Inn) was built on land
granted to the BRAY family by the Black Prince
in the 1300's
and was lived in
and improved by successive generations of the Brays til 1850!
Ed 's great-great
grandmother was Betsy BRAY!
(not necessarily related to this very same BRAY family!)
Other places of interest nearby: Tintagel Island, Boscastle, Bodmin Moor, Lanhydrock House & gardens and Pencarrow House.
Launceston Castle
Many relatives of Elizabeth Ann HOOPER,
(Ed's paternal great-grandmother) still live in the Launceston area today!
(Areas of HOOPER/MANICOM interest: Jacobstow, St Breward, Stratton, Warbstow)

ALL the children of William Geake MANICOM & Elizabeth Ann HOOPER
were born in Stratton
which is very near Bude, north of Tintagel on the coast.
Davidstow
Mary GEAKE, wife of Edward Charles MANICOM, was born here in 1847.
The parish is named after St David & the ending 'stow' indicates a holy place. In the past the parish was called 'Dewstow'
from the Cornish for David, 'Dewy'.
The parish lies about 12 miles to the West of Launceston.
There are a few isolated farms in the area & farming is the main industry.
A disused airfield is on Davidstow Moor and was used during WWII.
Mary Geake MANICOM's mother, Mary GEAKE,
was born in OTTERHAM about 1813.
Edward Charles MANICOM & his wife Mary GEAKE both died very young, within 1 year of each other and their 3 children were raised by their grandmother, Mary GEAKE Sr.
These are the surnames we are researching in Cornwall:
* Bray (circa 1814)
* Geake (circa 1813)
* Hooper
* Manicom/Manicoombe
* Spettigue (circa 1780 - later moved to Devon)
