Mary Trevan's Henwood Ancestors in Bodmin, Cornwall and then East Stonehouse, Devon

The earliest Henwood ancestors I have traced my line to are Thomas Henwood and Ann Tregoning. Their son John married Dorcas nee Coule and then moved to East Stonehouse, part of modern day Plymouth in Devon. This page represents only a couple of day's research since a family prayer book provided much of the information about Henry Henwood, his parents and his children. However there are several discrepancies of up to 2 weeks between the dates given in the family prayer book and the IGI

Thomas Henwood and Ann nee Tregoning

They married on 29 Apr 1783 at Bodmin.
They had at least 3 children
  1. Thomas Henwood (c1783-)
  2. Ann Henwood (c1785-) who married George Eveleigh on 11 Jun 1800 at Bodmin
  3. John Henwood (1793-1869)

John Henwood (1793-1869) and Dorcas nee Coule (1797-)

Mother: Dorcas was born on 20 Dec 1797 according to the entry in the family prayer book, and baptised on 26 Dec 1797 at St. Austell.
    They had 10 children
  1. Ann Henwood (1820-)
  2. John Henwood (1822-)
  3. Eliza Henwood (1823-)
  4. James Henwood (1826-before 1836)
  5. Richard Henwood (1828-)
  6. William Henwood (1830-) who married Elizabeth Ann Henderson on 30 Apr 1854 and Mary Emma Bate on 19 Jun 1864
Their children (based on 1871 and 1881 census, all born in Bodmin)

Their children (based on 1881 census)

    5. George Henwood (c1878-)
    6. Dorcas Mary Henwood (1880-)
  7. Henry Henwood (1833-86) who married Jenefer Ann Walters
  8. James Henwood (1836-), a twin
  9. Mary Henwood (1836-) , a twin, who married John Barrett Pope on 16 May 1863 at Bodmin
  10. Katherine Henwood (1839-)
Paternal grandparents: Thomas Henwood and Ann nee Tregoning
Maternal grandparents: Rd Cowle and Mary

At the time of the 1841 census the family were living at Middle Bodinniel in Bodmin. John and his eldest 2 surviving sons were all recorded as being Agricultural Labourers. Daughter Ann was not at home and was possibly already married; daughter Eliza had left home and was working as a servant to a schoolmaster, John Read, and son William had left home, and it is not clear where he was living as there were William Henwoods of the right age in Padstow, Callington and Stoke Climsland.

At the time of the 1851 census the family were still in Bodmin, this time at 208 Downing Square. According to the 2% sample of the 1851 British Census, John's wife is given as Jane, born in Charlestown, and sons William, Henry and James are still at home as is daughter Caroline (presumably Katherine).

Henry Henwood (1833-86) and Jenefer Ann Walters

Henry was born in Bodmin, Cornwall, and Jenefer Ann was born in Tywardreath, Cornwall. He was a shoemaker. He died of Cerebal Apolplexy. They married on 2 Aug 1856. Their children were
  1. Richard Henry Henwood (1857-)
  2. William John Henwood (1858-9)
  3. Elizabeth Ann Henwood (1860-4)
  4. Catharine Henwood (1862-)
  5. John Henwood (1864-)
  6. Mary Henwood (1865-7)
  7. James Henwood (1867-)
  8. Mary Elizabeth Henwood (1869-194x?) who married William Treliving Trevan in 1892
  9. Dorcas Ann Henwood (1871-)
  10. Eleazor William Henwood (1875-5)
