Henwood Family of Endellion and St Teath

Henwood Descendents of Thomas Henwood (-1745) and Hannah nee Linam

The earliest Henwood ancestors I had traced my line to were Richard (c1698-1775) and Christian Henwood who lived in the coastal parishes of Endellion / St. Teath area in the Deanery of Trigg Minor on the north coast of Cornwall.

Fortunately, in July 1999 this page was found by one of their descendents, Lynda Pomeroy nee Henwood, who already had this information and had also traced our family back a further generation to Thomas Henwood and Hannah nee Linam of the parish of Endellion. She has kindly not only given me her extra information but also permission to add it to these pages. She can be contacted at lynda@investigator.co.nz

Richard had a brother Thomas who left him certain legacies and appears to have had no family of his own.

It is noticable that for the generations researched that the number of girls is far greater than the number of boys.

There is a separate page with a chronological list of the Henwood related entries from the Parish Registers and / or Bishop's Transcripts from the parishes of St. Endellion and St. Teath and others.

Thomas Henwood (-1745?) and Hannah nee Linam (-1749)

Thomas Henwood married Hannah Linam, daughter and only child of Richard Linam (-1702) of Trewitherd, in Aug 1692 (Ref IGI HM M002371 0029). When her father died he left Hannah 5s and he also left 5s each to his grandsons John, Thomas, Richard and Hugh Henwood. The family appear to have lived in Endellion throughout their lives. Their known children are There was also a male Henwood baptised in 1717, and a James Henwood who was buried in 1718 in St Endellion, although it is unclear how he was related to this family. The most likely relationship is a younger child in the same family.
Thomas Henwood died on 25 Jun 1745 at St Endellion and Hannah died on 26 Oct 1749. She left a will in which her son Richard is mentioned.

Paternal grandparents: unknown

Richard (c1698-1775) and Christian Henwood (-1799)

They had at least 6 children (2 boys and 4 girls)
  1. Hugh Henwood (c1744-1774) was baptised 14 Apr 1744 and buried 16 Apr 1774 age 30 in St. Endellion church. His gravestone lies flat in one of the aisles. 2. Thomas Henwood (c1747-1803) was baptised 14 Feb 1747 and in 1770 married Mary Brown, both at St. Teath. He also inheritted under his uncle Thomas's will the property known as Carkeen in the parish of St Teath
  3. Christian Henwood (c1753-) was baptised 3 Feb 1753 at Endellion and married Hugh Bawden at St. Teath in 1781
She inheritted 40 pounds at the end of the 7th year in her uncle Thomas's will.
  4. Elizabeth Henwood (1734-) was baptised 30 Jul 1734 at St. Teath and married Richard Billing who was a mariner.
She inheritted 40 pounds at the end of the 4th year in her uncle Thomas's will.
  5. Hannah Henwood who married Mr Teague and was widowed before her father's will was written.
They had at least 1 child
    1. Christian Henwood Teague (inheritted under her grandfather's will)
  6. Jane Henwood (1748-) was baptised on 20 Sep 1748 at St. Endellion (the IGI gives it as 1740), married Richard Godby
She was named as Jane or Jenny in her uncle Thomas's will and inheritted 40 pounds at the end of the 6th year.
They had at least 2 children
    1. Hugh Henwood Godby (1774-) who was baptised at St. Endellion
    2. Jenny Henwood Godby (1787-) who was baptised at St. Endellion
Richard was buried on 2 Apr 1775 "in his 77th year" and was described as "Gentleman" in documents. Probate on his will (held at the CRO, Truro) was granted to his son-in-law Hugh Bawden on 19 Dec 1784.

Paternal grandparents: Thomas Henwood and Hannah nee Linam
Maternal grandparents: unknown

Thomas Henwood (c1747-1803) and Mary Brown (-1828)

They married 5 Sep 1770 at St Teath. Their children were (1 boy and 7 girls)
  1. Elizabeth Henwood who was baptised 24 Jul 1771 at St Teath.
She inheritted under her grandfather's will. It is possible that it was her who was buried on 27 Apr 1787
  2. Mary Henwood was baptised 16 Aug 1773 at St Teath and married Charles Blake
She inheritted under her grandfather's will.
  3. Margaret (Peggy) Henwood was baptised 26 Oct 1776 who married Matthew Oliver in 1799

Susan Brooks is a descendent who is actively researching her family history and can be reached by email at sbrook@integrityonline.com
    4. Thomas Henwood Oliver (1805-)
Anne Stephens is a descendent who is actively researching her family history and can be reached by email at SNEHPETS35@aol.com
  4. Christiana Henwood was baptised 24 Nov 1779 and married John Trevan also in 1799
I am descended from them and can be reached by email at mary.trevan@wxs.nl

  7. Nancy Henwood was baptised 11 Mar 1787 and married John Oliver in 1807
  8. Bettse Henwood was baptised 20 Jul 1790 and married Philip Philp on 14 Apr 1816 at St Teath.
It is strange that she was not mentioned in her father's will of 1803. One possibility is that her sister Elizabeth was the one who was buried in 1787, and although she was baptised as Bettse she was called Elizabeth in her father's will.

Henwood Descendents from a Common Ancestor who are not my Direct Line

The families listed below are not on my direct line, but are my distant cousins.

Thomas Henwood (c1785-1837) and Elizabeth nee Lyne (c1784-1852)

They married in her parish of Antony in the East, by licence, on 26 Apr 1809. Another Henwood couple, John and Ann, had a son baptised their, but it is not known if they are part of the same Henwood family or not. Their known children are, all of whom were baptised at St Teath, are

  1. Thomas Henwood (1810-78) who married Jane nee Snell (c1811-55) and then Catherine Ann nee Nicholls (1839-1938)
Although I have some information from the original records for this branch of the family, most of the information is from the Henwood family deposits at the Devon and Cornwall Record Society, Exeter, Devon. This traces Thomas Henwoods emigration to New Zealand with his 8 children a few years after the death of Jane, his wife, and his ancestry back to Thomas Henwood and Mary nee Brown. Unfortunately, although dates are shown, parishes and the source of information from Cornwall is not shown.
Fortunately, in July 1999 this page was found one of their descendents, Lynda Pomeroy nee Henwood, who already had this information and who has kindly not only given me her extra information but also permission to add it to these pages. She can be contacted at lynda@investigator.co.nz
  2. Mary Lyne Henwood (1811-65) who married John Martyn on 24 Apr 1838 at St Teath.
They emigrated on the same voyage as Mary's elder brother Thomas, along with her husband John's father, John Martyn senior. Both John Martyn's kept diaries during the voyage and this contributes to the knowledge about this branch of the family.
Justin Maloney is one of their descendents who is actively researching his family history and he can be reached by email at justin_maloney@yahoo.com
  3. William Lyne Henwood (1813- after 1858)
He was mentioned in his brother Hugh's will and described as of Camelford and as having a son Thomas. He married in the Camelford registration district in the first 3 months of 1838.
  4. Elizabeth Henwood (1816-) who most probably married Mr Gerrans (reference to Aunt Gerrans in Martyn diaries plus witness to brother(?) Hugh's will in 1858
  5. Hugh Henwood (1821-1858) - who married Mary Ann; date of death from one of the Martyn diaries
His will was proved in Oct 1859 and he was described as a Yeoman of Lanteglos by Fowey. His children named in the will were Mary Henwood and Elizabeth Henwood.

Thomas Henwood (1810-78) and Jane nee Snell (c1811-55) then Catherine Ann nee Nicholls (1839-1938)

Thomas and Jane had 11 children (4 boys and 7 girls), 8 of whom survived into adulthood. There are 3 monumental inscriptions to them and 2 of their children in the graveyard at St Teath. There is also a family bible which passed down into the Greenwood family which gives details of Thomas and Jane's 11 children.
  1. Mary Henwood (1836-1915), born 18 Aug 1836, died 28 Oct 1915, who married James Henry Hayr
  2. Jane Snell Henwood (c1837-52), born 31 Feb 1837 and died 25 Aug 1852

    Her obituary

Maternal grandparents (first marriage): Anthony Snell (-1850) and Elizabeth nee Burden (-1850) who married at Little Torrington, North Devon, on 13 Jun 1810. They lived at North Tawton, Devon

The family left England for New Zealand on 29 Nov 1857 on the "Joseph Fletcher". After arriving in New Zealand Thomas remarried to an 18 year old girl Catherine Ann Nicolls. She was also born in Cornwall, in Falmouth, and travelled to New Zealand with her parents Mr and Mrs William Nicholls on the "Bank of England". She died aged 99. The deposits in the Devon and Cornwall Record Society include newspaper cuttings but unfortunately the name of the paper and the date of publication is not indicated.

His second family comprised 7 children (4 boys and 3 girls), many of whom also lived until a higher than average age

  1. Thomas Henwood (1859-61)

  5. Albert Henwood (1868-1946) who married Maggie Paul
  6. Annie Gertrude Henwood (1872-1957) who married William McCrae
Their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are listed on the deposit at Devon and Cornwall Record Society, but the photocopy is almost illegible. So it is most probable that it was someone on this line who made the deposit. Their children shown here, and Annie's siblings offspring except for Thomas, are from a tree prepared by Irene Levet nee Henwood and copied to me by her grandson Alan Hall. Thomas's offspring (which includes Alan's grandmother) were provided by Lynda Pomeroy.

William Lyne Henwood married Mary Jane Nicholls, the sister of his step-mother. A family tree showing their descendents from information prepared by Irene Levet nee Henwood and copied to me by her grandson Alan Hall.

Their children:
