Cavalry Maiden: Journals
of a Female Russian Officer in the Napoleonic Wars by Nadezhda Durova. Translated with introduction & notes by Mary Fleming Zirin. Durova ran away from home and disguised herself as a man to join the Russian cavalry. Zirin provides additional historical information, pointing out where Durova hid certain aspects of her earlier life when publishing her account in later years, for example, making no reference to her marriage and child that she left behind. |

Uncommon Soldier: The
Civil War Letters of Sarah Rosetta Wakeman, Alias Pvt.
Lyons Wakeman, 153rd Regiment, New York State Volunteers edited by Lauren Cook Burgess Short but interesting. Wakeman dressed as a man to join the Union Army and wrote letters home to her family. Burgess came across these while researching female Civil War soldiers after the National Park Service kicked her out of a reenactment at Antietam for portraying a female soldier. She successfully sued the NPS for sex discrimination and has documented more than 100 women soldiers who served in the Union and Confederate armies. |
