Collector's Guide to Early Photographs
by O. Henry Mace

When I first started collecting old photographs this book was a great help to me (and still is). Well-illustrated with clear explanations on how to date photographs by their mounts, the book also contains a lot of information about cased photographs (daguerreotypes, tintypes, etc.).
Photography & the American Scene
by Robert Taft

Originally published in the 1930s, this history of photography in America captures the wonder that the first photographic images inspired. Samuel Morse wrote after visiting Daguerre's studio in 1839: "[t]he exquisite minuteness of the delineation cannot be conceived. No painting or engraving ever approached it."
