Cars, horse and carriage ...

Your transport to the church, to the photography session and to your reception, and perhaps to your honeymoon destination (or at least the airport!) Get on the grapevine - ask around. There may be a family member or friend with a white Mercedes or other large comfortable car, or even a convertible, if you wish to flirt with hairstyle disaster! I have seen a 60's style wedding beautifully carried off in two gorgeous old Ford Customlines (huge with fins at the back) and a couple who left the church in the groom's mother's Italian sports car. And a recent bride hired two matching white cars from a national hire chain for the entire weekend of their wedding. Supplying your own or borrowed cars can mean that you have the problem of organising drivers for them. If you're borrowing cars or using your own, make sure they are mechanically serviced. If it's a hot day, make sure someone checks the radiator and watches the engine temperature carefully. Nothing spoils anything more than a breakdown! Making your own dolls or teddy bears for the front of the cars is great fun. Keep an eye out for small dolls, you may even find them already dressed as brides in the stores around Christmas time. Naked dollies, teddy bears and koala bears can be found in craft shops, and can be dressed in 10cm of tulle and/or white nylon lining fabric and a bit of ribbon. A bear or doll's outfit can be stapled or hot glue gunned on, if you feel you can't sew. The outfit doesn't have to look perfect because most guests won't get that close to the front of the wedding vehicles! A word about using crepe paper streamers - white is fine, but don't use coloured crepe if there's a possibility of them getting wet, as the owner of the car may not be amused at dye splashes on the paintwork. Nylon fabric ribbon is usually colourfast. Then again, who says you need to heed tradition, you could always have no decoration on the front of the car at all!

Swan Taxis in Perth do a very affordable service using their executive cars, which have no signage on the rear or the doors, only the box on top which says "engaged" (rather cute on the way to the church!) They will also supply ribbons and dolls in your choice of colour for the front of the cars. That takes care of the drivers, parking and mechanical reliability for a one off price. They can also guarantee air-conditioned vehicles in summer.

Limousines charge like wounded bulls and have a very long minimum hire period, but if your heart is set on a Hollywood style wedding then do more homework, check your resources. Don't plan on getting married during the school ball season because limos will be fully booked well in advance! A colleague even hired a helicopter to get her groom to the church in style, so anything's possible! There are also black London cabs doing weddings, and if you are marrying or having your reception near water, consider arriving by boat. You don't necessarily have to hire a boat, resources may turn up someone who owns one and may provide a ride for your special day.
