Thinking out loud . . .

I thought I'd write about my history.
My mother looks Cherokee to me. She always wore her long hair in braids. I used to think she must be as beautiful as Eve was. I was in awe that she was my mother. When I was sick she would sit beside me and stroke my forehead with her hands. She has beautiful hands.

In 1994, I met a wonderful man. We EACH married for the second time. He showed me that I was not broken. We have a precious son together. And now that I am safe, I have returned to what I have always loved . . .

When I first began to go outside my home and talk to Creator, a toad decided to start coming out from under the sidewalk each time I prayed. Country thinks this creature claimed me. From what I understand, the toad is very closely associated with Mother Earth, and healing. I actually find great comfort in that thought. My life and emotions need a mother, and need healing, too. So I look for the legends and teachings that can open this knowledge.

I have been having dreams, too.

In one, I am inside a round house. There is a huge brown owl circling the ceiling and dipping towards my head. I'm a little bit afraid of it because it's flying so close, but I don't think it's going to hurt me.

In another dream, I am walking in the North Arkansas Mountains that I love so much from when I was a girl. Only I know it was a long time ago. Someone who I love very much is with me; pointing, but I can't see them. We are so happy to be there. I know that we will come back often, but I don't know why.

And then there is the dream where I am tending my garden, and it's very important that I get the borders right. I have this stack of branches, and I'm trying to line the edges of the garden with them, but they are bent wrong. There is no one to straighten them, and my hands are too weak to do it myself. I'm crying and asking for help. Someone is there with his back to me. I don't know who it is, but he is humming softly, the same song over and over. Someone else is there too. I think it's someone I know, but she won't talk to me either. She has this small, thin flute and it is the prettiest thing. An aurora of a rainbow seems to be spreading out from the flute, but she won't help me with the branches either, and I'm just crying and working. I want to understand because there is a reason they are in my garden, but the dream ends.

Earlier this year I was missing my gramma terribly. About the time I began talking to Country and looking to learn about my heritage a blackberry bush grew up in the middle of my crape myrtle tree in my front yard. We do not have blackberries near our home. I know my gramma gave me this bush. My husband said a bird was lucky and ate seeds and pooped them in our tree/yard. I still think it's a gift from gramma.

I also think it's a way for Creator to tell me that I'm not wasting my time.

This information is here so I have access to it as I study. I got it from a pedigree chart listed on www.ancestry.com

My genealogy

a work in progress!

A few links to some Goforth information that I'd like to share:

A Starting place for our Goforth line is laid out by far distant cousins. The family history is very interesting. The 1830, census for Wayne County shows three Goforth families living in that southern Middle Tennessee area -- Haslip, William and Zachariah. The 1838 tax list shows Zachariah owned 22 acres. These names are entwined in my Goforth line. One of these men had a son, Zachariah Goforth; born September 1826 in Tenn, and died August 16, 1907 in Crawford Co, Ark (or Sequoyah Co, Ok)
He married (1) Nancy Abt. 1842. She was born Abt. 1826 in TN.
He married (2)Margaret Sophia Lindsey Abt. 1867 in Texas. She was born Abt. 1837 in Mississippi, and died Abt. 1887 in (AR).
He married (3)Phoebe April 01, 1888 in Carroll County, Arkansas. She was born November 1845 in Mo.
Margaret Lindsey is our elusive link to the Dawes Roll. She is listed as a parent on card #288. Only one or two members of the family were actually listed on the Dawes Roll. Margaret had a land allotment through the lottery. I believe that as we piece the history of this family together, we can see that the move was made to TX about the time Daniel Boone moved from TN.
Our history is, interestingly, pretty consolidated area wise from James Goforth, forward. Here is a map of the area.

Notes for Zachariah Goforth:

In Confederate Service: Co K., 19 Texas Cavalry, (Burford's Regiment) private. Roll date Camp Stonewall Jackson, Headquarters 19th regiment Texas Cavalry, Dallas County, June 26, 1862.

Mustered: by John C. McCoy
When: April, 1862
Joined for duty: April 1862, by Capt. James Thomas
Descript: 5' 10 1/4"
Eyes: gray; hair: black.
valuation of horse $110. equip. $15.

My great-great-grandfather was James Thomas Goforth, named after Zachariah's commanding officer.

RE: index to Confed. Pension Applic. for Ark.
Goforth, Z., Co. K 19th Tex. Cav.; he applied 1906, Crawford, Co, AR; he died August 16, 1907. Van Buren, Crawford Co, Ark: July Term Book H, pg 99 July 1, 1907 Petition of Z. Goforth, citizen of Crawford Co, AR, he is in indigent circumstances. He has sore leg and foot, the result of wounds received in Civil War, he has no property or means of support, other than a Confederate Pension of $100 p/yr. and on account of his afflictions, he is unable to earn a support. Placed on pauper list @ $10.00 p/mo.

From this point on, I have accurate records of Zachariah Goforth's NINTH Child, James Thomas Goforth. I have a file crudely saved in html format that can be accessed HERE I have some ideas as to why Zachariah Goforth was divorced and remarried. If you ever want to discuss it, just email me.

I can't link to it because of some nudity.
