Pseudo Tumor Cerebri. Also known as PTC, Benign Intracranial Hypertension, and Ideopathic Intracranial Hypertension. PTC is an elavation of cerebro-spinal fluid that causes pressure in the skull. Pressure is often put on the optic nerve causing double vision, as in my case. Other effects of this condition range from nausea, dizzyness, headache, loss of vision, menstrual irregularities, and short term memory loss. Tinnitus, intracranial noises or "whooshing" in the ear, is also common in those with PTC. In a vast majority of cases, PTC has no known cause. Lupus and some birth control, such as Depo-Provera, have been known to elevate pressure. Other medications can also cause a rise in fluids. Treatment can include spinal taps, shunts, and medication. People suffering from this condition must educate themselves, due to the lack of knowledge by the medical profession in general. Active participation in treatment is beneficial. There is no known cure.
