A Little About Me...

I am 28 years old and currently reside in Cary, outside of Raleigh, where I work as a litigation paralegal for Hunton & Williams

I grew up in Wilkesboro and attended West Wilkes High School. I received my Bachelors in Political Science from East Carolina University in 1999 and my Paralegal Certificate from Meredith College in 2001.

One of my platforms and pet projects is Protect Our Waterways and Scenic Spaces.  My goal is to spread the word about maintaining the natural beauty of our nation by keeping our natural areas clean and pristine. Each year I participate in the North Carolina Big Sweep as well as other river clean-ups sponsored by Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful and American Rivers.

North Carolina has over 40,000 miles of rivers and streams stretching from the Appalachian Mountains to the Intercostal Waterway. These rivers and streams provide each of us with beauty as well as power and food. Unfortunately not everyone realizes what a vital part of the community these bodies of water truly are.

Last year alone over 280 tons of litter was collected from the North Carolina water ways (statistics from North Carolina Big Sweep). As citizens we need to realize that each of us is a steward for our waterways.

Here's what you can do:

  • Don't throw litter onto the road because it will be washed into the rivers.
  • Don't throw your cigarette butts on the ground because they too will end up in our rivers.
  • Recycle your plastics and glass keeping them not only out of our rivers, but also out of our landfills.
  • Join groups such as NC Big Sweep, your church group or just your family, and clean up an area where you live.
  • Enjoy the beauty of our waterways and be a responsible outdoorsmen by not leaving trash or stray items behind.
