Austrian gay organizations work hard to get the world's attention to the situation for homosexuals in the country. Though this doesn't seem too good, I don't think gay life in Austria is much worse anymore than in many other western democracies if you show some discretion. I may of course be wrong, only having passed through the country once, in 1991. I was, however, surprised of the number of gay porno-magazines being openly displayed by vendors on the pavements of Vienna and in shops.
Austria's Administrative Court has ruled that persons who undergo a sex-change operation can then get married to someone of the opposite sex. Prostitution is legal in all provinces except western Vorarlberg.
