President's Son

The President's Son scrutinizes power and corruption at the highest levels of government. The fact that it shoots from the hip at the American capital does not diminish the possibility (or probability) that the houses of power around the world are rife with political savagery. Set in the mid-eighties, prior to the re-unification of Germany and the break-up of the Soviet Union, the White House is still rampant with American paranoia of Communism on the doorstep. Combined with homophobia and the fact that the President's son is gay, officials close to the Oval Office take it upon themselves to ensure that scandal does not derail President Marshall's bid for a second term. First, they must deal with the President's son, D.J., who agreed to marry a childhood friend to maintain the straight, wholesome image a president's family should always display. But D.J.'s heart really belongs to Terry, a mechanic who, when unable to see D.J. for exteneded periods, resorts to booze and drugs and becomes very unruly, giving the secret service a very difficult time.
Krandall Kraus has assembled a cast of intriguing characters in a true thriller. A little slow off the mark, the story eventually becomes a superb thriller, filled with finely woven sub-plots and some very masterful plot twists. You soon become swept up in the old cliché that you just don't know who to trust in Washington. Certainly, D.J. and Terry had some difficulty knowing whether or not they could trust D.J.'s 'K' agent, his personal secret service bodyguard, Parker. But after the murders begin, D.J. feels he has no choice but turn to the one man he feels closest to and soon finds himself drawn closer to Parker than he could have imagined possible. Elaine, D.J.'s wife, also finds that she must put her faith in a man, whose sworn allegiance is to his country and not really the individuals to whom he is assigned. The D.C. grapevine is also a source of intrigue as the viciousness of a life in politics takes his toll and the lives and obsessions of the men and women closest to the president mesh together and rip each other apart to succeed in a political system that seems set to destroy itself.
D.J. and his relationships are a little rough around the edges, but he is a compelling character, one you grow to care for and sympathize with. He is a very emotional and caring person, not at all suited to life at the White House. He is the one character you will feel totally linked to through the entire story, from his rushed return from France to the startling conclusion of a tale of high stakes and shattered dreams.
