As mentioned on the homepage, Denton is not exactly an oasis of homosexuality. However, due to the college atmosphere it does seem to have a more educated and tolerant vibe than other smaller towns in Texas. No matter where you go in this town you'll usually see "family" if your gaydar is working. Below are some links and suggestions we think are specifically useful for gays and lesbians in Denton.
Businesses, Organizations/Services, Publications & Nightlife Denton Businesses: We don't want to imply that the following businesses are specifically "gay". They are, however, local businesses frequented by a noticable gay and lesbian clientele.
- Hair By Steven: Whether you want new and trendy or basic butch. Specializing in color and corrective color. By appointment only. Phone 940-300-3489. Talk to Steven.
- The Cupboard: One of the best "health food" stores in the entire Metroplex. The Cupboard is vastly more than just vitamins and wheat germ. You can purchase a huge selection of organic and vegetarian foods, eat at their built-in "deli", shop for vitamins and herbs, buy beer & wine for the discriminating palate and peruse their large selection of gift items. The Cupboard is located at 200 W. Congress. Their phone number is 940-387-5386.
- Sleeping Lizzards: A neat little gift shop with an emphasis on handmade crafts and jewelry. Avoid the mall crowd at X-mas time or just stop in to look for yourself. Located at 424 N. Elm. Phone number 940-484-4056.
- Cappucino Cafe: A fantastic little eatery specializing in sandwiches, coffees and desserts. Generally a quiet intellectual sort of place but where you can sometimes find a local musician strumming a guitar. Usually frequented by women, fyi. Located at 707 Sunset. Phone number 940-565-1808.
- Sunset Grill: A great hamburger joint with a blue collar bar vibe. Live music frequently during the evenings. For the more "down home" mentality, you'll often spot "good ole boys" at the bar. Don't worry. They won't bother you if you don't bother them. Definitely more of an older gay women's place than for men. Located at 809 Sunset. Phone number 940-484-4165.
- Brick Haus Café: Coffee bar recommended by members of GLAD. You'll find this place over at 219 West Oak by UNT. Their number is 940-566-6690.
