Like It Is

Like It Is premiered to sell-out crowds this March at the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and is now enjoying extended runs in UK theaters. Audiences and critics alike responded wildly to the film's new young stars, actor Ian Rose and Steve Bell - the UK's ABA Featherweight Boxing Champ making his debut acting performance. Like It Is also stars the legendary Roger Daltrey of the Who as Kelvin, a gay music executive with a taste for young flesh and British pop star Dani Behr as Paula, a pouty, spoiled diva.

Craig (Bell) is a 21 year old northern lad-about-town, making cash from illegal bare-knuckle fights. His is a hard and ugly world where survival means winning. To Craig's mates, trapped in a macho world of bravado and violence, he is "one of us" but Craig knows he is gay - "one of them". A chance meeting outside a club leads Craig to a brief and clumsy sexual encounter with Matt (Rose), a self-assured Londoner visiting Blackpool, a liason that irrevocably changes both their lives.

Craig flees the escalating violence of Blackpool and turns up on Matt's doorstep where he is introduced to the freedom of Soho, an openly gay world he never imagined existed. Matt inhabits the London music scene and considers himself a 90s gay man. He is cynical about love and driven by his success and ambition, but finds himself unexpectedly falling in love with Craig. Craig in turn is excited by this world but feels his background betrays his ignorance.

As their love grows the illusions on which their relationship is built begin to crumble, not helped by those close to Matt who seek to break them up. Kelvin, Matt's wolfish boss, dismisses Craig as "northern rough trade" but is threatened by his increasing influence. Paula, Matt's flatmate and his most successful pop act, grows jealous when his attention is no longer focused on her needs alone.

Craig is vulnerable and Matt struggles to choose between his ambition and his happiness. In desperation, Craig confronts his fears by returning to Blackpool for one last bloody fight...
Like It Is is fast-paced, gritty and humorous. Set against London's cutting-edge club culture, it takes a candid look at gay life today and reflects the exuberance of modern urban Britain.
