Activists are busy spreading the news, especially to teenagers, that the country's sex laws were reformed when no one was looking.
If the age of consent for homosexual acts was equalized with that for heterosexual acts but nobody knew about it, would it make a difference? Only perhaps for those confronted by police. Israel actually amended its penal code in July to lower the age of consent for homosexual acts from 18 years to 16 to match that for heterosexuals, but somehow it was never widely reported.
The amendment also for the first time extended to homosexual acts a clause already in place for heterosexual acts, that consensual acts involving 14- and 15-year-olds will not be prosecuted where the partner's age is no more than three years different. The national Association of Homosexuals and Lesbians is now publicizing the legal change so that gay and lesbian teens can have one less worry, Ha'aretz reported November 1.
