Character and Personality

The following paragraphs concern the study of YAKI's personality, as induced by the positions of the planets and Rising sign. Some of the character traits mentioned may seem completely contradictory and incompatible. This is because the rough-hewn personality is a rarity. Usually, individuals are made up of a subtle orchestration of many different tones or aspects. However, serious introspection or detailed analysis should make it possible to distinguish the opposing or diverging images comprising YAKI's overall character, and perhaps, in time, find the best and most harmonious way to integrate them.

YAKI has a dual nature. Two tendencies dwell within his psyche: one is related to his instincts, and endows him with supreme strength and intense material desires, and the other flows from a higher psychic authority, the superego or human ideal, and inspires him with a precise awareness of his purpose and dignity as a human being among his fellows. The distinctiveness,if not the opposition, between these two tendencies is likely to trouble his quest for inner harmony at times. However, the difficulty he must overcome is not limited to a conflict between these two natures. Instead, he must choose which direction the energy generated by the contradiction will take. In other words, in more practical terms, if YAKI identifies with the power residing in society and the complex interactions of human beings, he can find one goal, one direction in which the power can lead. The positive side of this nature is the cohesive and all-encompassing understanding he derives from it. In daily life, he could be a resourceful and valuable organizer, designer, leader, or legislator. In fact, he has the native skills necessary for managing and leading a team of co-workers. The coherence of his thought is apt to enable him to budget and organize human energies for maximum profit and minimum loss. Overlooking from the outset trivial details and a tendency to be unable to see the forest for the trees, he can implement global, methodical systems and structures to solve problems. On another level, YAKI has a nature profoundly attached to morality and ethics. He conceives of ethics as a practical system for human relations, not an idealistic and unattainable dream. Indeed, it should be noted that it is inexact to call him an idealist. If he seeks an ideal, it is based on what already exists, by organizing it and putting it into practice, by seeing it operate smoothly and efficiently. His originality comes from the fact that he always strives to go beyond common sense in search of a new perspective, which would enrich the spirit and transform values. All of these skills and resources predispose YAKI to devote himself to society. In the process, however, he is likely to overdo it to such a degree that his own personality is overshadowed. That is, he would identify too heavily with his social mask (his persona), and lose his awareness of his individuality.

YAKI yearns for a purpose in life, even faraway or abstract.

YAKI's personality develops mainly in the shelter of the home: he is attached to his family, his heritage, and his past.

At the time of YAKI's birth, his Rising Sign was located in Leo (the Lion), while the Sun was passing through the constellation of Sagittarius (the Archer). Both are ruled by the same element, FIRE, which augurs a certain cohesiveness for his character. A summary of the various clues mentioned above provide YAKI's personality profile; the following key words distill the essence of his character and indicate certain contradictions which may be sources of tension:

Narcissism - Impetuosity - Determination - Enthusiasm - Pride and self-assurance - Group spirit - Superiority - Impressionability - Brilliance - Analytical mind - Generosity - Worldliness - Positivism - Projection.

YAKI's energetic, generous personality, his contagious optimism, makes him an engaging and pleasant person to know. Combined with his emotionalism, his dynamism gives him a great deal of originality and style. However, driven by his narcissism, he may devote a great deal of his powers to obtaining even more admiration (magnificent promises, authority, etc.). This is why some people perceive him as vain and pretentious, worldly and superficial. Because of his outspoken, straightforward ways, a tendency to make generalizations, and a taste for flattery, he must be careful not to make mistakes in judgment or evaluation.

Born in seven to ten days after the rising of the New Moon, YAKI is said to be a " First Quarter " lunar type. This " soli-lunar " configuration means that his character is strong-willed and sometimes proud, always determined to buck convention and innovate. Monotony is unbearable to him, and he chafes under the yoke of routine. As a result, he often runs into trouble with authority figures. When overwhelmed by his conscience, he raves about how destructive it is to long for the past, hos ridiculous it is to be old-fashioned, and how obsolete the old values are. Generally speaking, his monthly energy flow crests about seven to ten-and-a-half days after the Full Moon. He would be wise to schedule intensive work phases at that time, as well as ambitious and demanding projects. At that time, his initiatives will be most successful, especially if he is trying to create something new and original: cutting edge!

Due to the influence of Jupiter dominating his birth chart, YAKI has undeniable social ambition and many resources with which to achieve it (see CAREER POTENTIAL). Relatively confident in himself and his abilities, he has the potential to be a leader and chief. It therefore seems probable that he will rise to success. However, he should question himself about what sort of success he seeks, and at what price. He should be aware that the taste of victory may be bitter if he finds he has sacrificed other aspects of life, like love, friendship, or creativity, to obtain it. He must consciously select what he is willing to invest in order to secure honor, money, and social consideration.

Temperament

The graph below reveals the various influences on YAKI's nature in relation to the percentage value of each element. These values were calculated according to the number of planets and the hierarchical position of each one (dominant, luminary, etc.). The basic personality tendencies as described here will no doubt be counteracted to some degree by the environmental, psychological, or emotional needs outlined in the next chapter. Nevertheless, they form the roots of his psyche, anchoring it as it grows and develops.

YAKI seeks to make his inner wealth outwardly manifest and substantial.

YAKI's tendency to introversion inclines him to live inside himself, amid his inner world. He is apt to listen to his subjectivity, his intuition, and his secret opinions rather than reason and logic.

YAKI's uppermost concern is his personal, subjective interest. Because the development of his personal identity requires great individual freedom of action, he tries to free himself from outer restraints and limitations. Psychologically self-centered, he remains fairly detached from the social world; he reduces such commitments to the strict minimum. Individualistic and egocentric, he derives his feelings of inner security from his ability to command his will and handle his personal involvement's freely and openly.

For YAKI, the family is deeply meaningful. He remains attached to his childhood and the memories associated with it. Mentally, he is a seeker, a deliver, a questioner who enjoys solving the mysteries of life. History, tradition, and the origins of his family and ancestry might become hobbies or even a profession. He will be very conscious of the legacy he has received from his forebears, and eager to enrich it.

YAKI needs to assert his originality. He is individualistic and independent, and lives life according to his own rules. People and things matter to him only insofar as they relate to him, and he ignores or disregards any annoyances he may encounter. His passions are lively and ardent, and he truly loves to give. He is endowed with great authenticity, and can be quite generous, as long as he is aware that others admire him.

Although he may not necessarily notice the fact about himself, because he is so strongly engaged in actions, feelings, or material concerns, YAKI lacks judgment. This impairment arises from a difficulty in obtaining perspective on himself and his life. He may be puzzled by his troubled relations with others. He must make an effort to detach himself from his personal action and observe it from a cooler, more distant standpoint. If not, he is likely to find himself under strain or pressure because he did not give enough prior thought to tactics and strategy. He may also experience dissatisfaction in his intimate relationships because of his difficulty in cooperating with others effectively. He gives a wide berth to anyone he sees as too " intellectual ", because he resists adapting to new ideas and people. In fact, an idea which rubs him the wrong way mentally and emotionally may elicit an explosive reaction from him. Since he is allergic to self-analysis, he refuses to develop an idea of himself - and this plays a lot of tricks on him.

The behavioral roles and models YAKI adopts are based mainly on mental processes. He determines his purposes in life after careful reflection; he is attracted by intellectual theories and systems. A mobile personality, he is skilled at meeting people and may spontaneously establish very close friendships, even if they are not usually lasting. Impressionable and subject to the pressures of his environment, his relationships, both private and professional, are relatively unstable.

Psychological Analysis

The following psychological study is a " blind " analysis which cannot take into consideration factors proper to YAKI's social background or education. Nevertheless, it describes the basic structure and dynamic of his psyche as the result of an interplay of various influences; that is, without confining it to certain categories or arbitrarily putting a label on it. Certain contradictions may appear, but they are an integral part of the paradoxes and ambivalence of his nature. It is impossible for us to predict which tendency will win out: that will depend on YAKI's decision.

Consciousness and The ideal of Self:

YAKI is determined to obtain a superlative grip on his emotional urges; he practices holding back his impulses and controlling them. Although it is not an easy apprenticeship, he wants to be able to bear strain with patience, endurance, and stamina. More than anyone else, he is aware of the need for a solid and stable foundation as a prerequisite to any effective action.

At the moment of YAKI's birth, the two celestial " lights " (the Sun and the Moon) were symmetrically aligned. This is a portent of harmony between the masculine and feminine archetypes which is extremely beneficial. It is the source of balance and understanding between the two main psychological realms which may be said to compose the personality. YAKI thus enjoys a positive complementarity and understanding between the conscious and unconscious aspects of his psyche, between his determination and his routines, between his drive for self-assertion and his receptivity, his ideal and his sensitivity. His parents almost certainly reflected a positive image of the marriage relationship to him, and it is likely that they encouraged him to develop his own individuality. As a result, he was and is able to be comfortable with himself as he is instead of striving to attain his parents' ideal. This has definitely contributed to the maintenance of a good relations with them and the rest of the family. In YAKI's emotional relationships with his peers, one of the effects of the masculine/feminine harmony is that the images his ego projects on the other are especially constructive. The bonds of the relationship are not felt to be constraints, the energy which flows between the two people is a source of mutual happiness, not regret. No major personal conflicts are projected onto the " other " - that is, the significant woman.

YAKI has an inalienable awareness of the void and the vanity of existence. He is sometimes disoriented and deconstructed by an unknowable, unconscious force, and tends to ignore or disparage the superficial pleasures and pains of daily life, preferring to dive into the depths of human experience as deeply as his intellectual, emotional, and spiritual capacities permit. Grappling with his " fundamental nature ", with the deepest and most primitive part of himself, he is sometimes aghast at the discovery of the sheer power of the life instinct, and feels an imperious need to cope with it. This special consciousness he has been endowed with is somewhat beyond the bounds of conventional schools of human understanding and thought, and may be a source of identity problems for him at the outset. It is not easy for him to recognize himself in any social or narcissistic models, or identify with any existing roles or attitudes, so he sometimes finds himself forced to construct and assert his own identity on a basis which may impress others with its intensity, if not its eccentricity.

Adaptation and Sensitivity:

Lively and expressive, YAKI has a personality which is sometimes agitated, but straightforward. Unconscious feelings of insecurity compel him to act and sometimes to seek the admiration of others. As a result, he is unable to bear idleness and routine, and he is in search of perpetual excitement. His reactions to others are highly individual and depend on the mood he is in at any given moment. A man of decision, a businessman or an athlete, he often personifies boldness and impetuosity. His love life is liable to be stormy, as it obeys the imperatives of his desire for freedom and independence, and his need for change.

YAKI has a lively and curious intelligence, the very opposite of empty rhetoric and studiousness. He is agile and adaptable, and can not only analyze difficult situations objectively, but also demonstrates a profound comprehension when faced with a psychological problem.

Although his demeanor is cold and distant, YAKI is extremely sensitive. In some cases, his rather austere and rigid behavior and his refusal to yield too readily to sentimentality discourage others from being too demonstrative of their tenderness and affection. He has spells of melancholy in which he does not feel worthy of being loved, and tends to forbid himself any emotional fulfillment whatsoever. An austere or somewhat traumatic childhood experience may be the source of this behavior. He may have suffered rejection in his infancy, and, as a result, lacked the parental love which is essential to the cohesion of a personality and identity. In order to feel secure, and to protect himself from ever suffering rejection or abandonment again, he withdrew into himself and developed his aloofness as a defense mechanism. When he finally lets down his defenses and allows himself to express his feelings, he tends to become impassioned and exalted, and may be a bit demanding of his partner. He is fairly introverted and egocentric, and has a powerful sense of his own identity.

YAKI has a nagging feeling of insecurity which affects his psychology and dampens his natural enthusiasm. His need to take action and assert himself is sometimes disturbed by this gnawing fear.

Love and Sensuality:

YAKI's attractions are usually immediate and intense. They rise quickly to fever pitch. The story of these passions is often dramatic to excess, combining all the plot elements of a classic love tragedy: jealousy, possessiveness, agony as an erotic stimulant, etc.

YAKI's birth chart indicates an emotional function which is expressed in a direct and fairly impulsive way. He enjoys reaching out to other people and making discoveries. An eternal teenager with his gaze riveted on the future, he is imbued with an eminently subjective and personal idealism.

Continually riding a wave of enthusiasm, YAKI quickly becomes infatuated with new conquests and just as rapidly dispatches old affairs which have gone stale. His reputation and his many successes are hardly an incentive to him to change his adventurous lifestyle. Nevertheless, the day will come when he is enchanted by a strong-minded, dynamic, self-sufficient woman. Together, they will found a stable and happy home. At that point, he will form a deep and enduring attachment to his wife and to his children.

YAKI exerts an odd and somewhat mysterious power of attraction. But he is irresistibly lured to women who break his heart, and he seems almost to have an affinity for tormented but intense relationships. In a rage of disappointment, he is likely to go from total love to total indifference. He is especially attracted to possessive and complex women.

YAKI has the fiery, importunate nature of a fervent lover. Indeed, affairs of the heart are one of his main purposes in life. His personal charm and magnetism are compellingly seductive; unfortunately, his attempts at conquest do not always lead to the fulfillment and satisfaction of his desires. Due to his impulsiveness and impatience to initiate new encounters, his approach to members of the other sex may sometimes lack tact and delicacy. As a result of the foregoing, it may be somewhat difficult for him to maintain stable and harmonious relationships. Indeed, his emotional behavior is subject to a conflict between his quest for love and his need to satisfy his lust. His outpourings of affection and his need to be loved in return sometimes create complicated situations in which lust may be confused with love, or love may exist without lust, and he may feel unrequited or unfulfilled. This inner contradition is a sign of his tendency to derive pleasure from suffering: either his own, or that of his partner. The relationship thus becomes the setting for a sort of power struggle, weakening it as a source of psychological equilibrium. Nevertheless, YAKI could sublimate this difficulty through artistic expression.

YAKI may be characterized by strong sensual and affectionate urges which drive him to seek pleasure, sometimes to an unreasonable degree. His need for romantic fulfillment may compel him to marry, because he also seeks the legal and social legitimacy the institution of marriage confers on an emotional bond. Indeed, the household is liable to be prosperous and even opulent, as if this offered further evidence that YAKI had indeed achieved success. However, privately, YAKI tends to be less committed; he sometimes neglects the obligations and duties to his partner he is now legally bound to fulfill, and may behave rather selfishly and egotistically. He should make an effort to correct these tendencies, or his behavior is likely to be a source of tension in the household.

YAKI is hypersensitive, and tends to relive the anxieties, apprehensions, and romantic absolutes of his first love relationships, which occurred around the ages of 13-14 years or 20-21 years. He is exquisitely thin-skinned, almost agonizingly so, but almost completely barricaded behind a layer of aloofness and chill; his relationship aspirations are both impossible to attain and despotically inclined. He will not settle for anything less than eternal commitment, total harmony, and absolute loyalty. This rather excessive demand is the sign of an emotional injury and an occasional inability to express his romantic feelings and engage himself in experience. YAKI is sometimes presumed to be emotionless and cold, even by those close to him. He usually hides his emotional reactions or does not even allow them to reach the level of his consciousness, in an effort to protect his sensitivity, which he sees as his weak point. He is fairly vulnerable, even in the intimacy of a stable and established relationship, and constantly needs reassurance. Usually, he will disguise his strong feelings as a kind of possessiveness or even jealousy. Certain misfortunes may arouse a negative emotional state inside him, and he feels unworthy of the love which is lavished on him. This psychological prohibition which rules over all of his desires and affects should loosen with the passage of time; likewise, his fear of approaching and accosting the other will diminish. As a result, the second part of his romantic life will be more rewarding. In any case, if he wants to experience a harmonious love relationship and gratify himself emotionally, the defense mechanisms he has elaborated to make himself inaccessible to others will have to be dismantled. Any profound relationship will also require that he learn how to forget himself occasionally in the other.

Mental and intellect:

More theoretical than logical and more intuitive than rational, YAKI's thought patterns come to the fore when they are applied to a vast subject. He is attracted to wide open spaces and distant horizons; as a scholar, he feels an affinity for higher studies such as philosophy or law. However, foreign languages or contacts abroad might also interest him.

YAKI expresses his thoughts and ideas in direct, spontaneous outbursts. He is fairly extroverted, and eager to discover and understand the outer world. An idealist, he looks forward to a bright future, but is sometimes subjective and reckless.

YAKI has a lively and agile spirit. He is curious and open-minded, approaching various life experiences with an attitude free of dogmatism and prejudice. As a result of his great mental vitality, he tends to have an opinion on every subject, but he does not always have the patience or perspective necessary to examine a subject and gain real insight. He enjoys manipulating expressions and concepts and amuses himself with witty remarks, satire, and controversy. If he learned to control his flow of words better and elaborate his thought more, he might make a talented communicator or even a literary man. Because he is often too hasty to formulate and construct the arguments which would back up and inform his ideas, he is sometimes misunderstood. He is often blind to the rashness of his judgments, and convinced they are well-founded and objective, which sometimes irritates the people around him. If he were to succeed in disciplining his mind somewhat, he would have innumerable opportunities to apply his communications skills to a great career. However, he should be careful of his nerves.

YAKI sometimes makes mistakes in judgment, and his understanding of things is not always in tune with social realities or prevailing opinion. His judgments tend to be hasty; his decisions are reckless. Moreover, he tends to overestimate his abilities, and usually aims higher than he can reach. Once an enterprise or project is underway, he may try to avoid obstacles by dodging certain duties. Because his vision of the world differs somewhat from social realities, he should be extremely careful and scrupulous in regard to legal matters, in order to avoid any complications of that type. He is sometimes slightly dishonest in his relations; he may break promises or attempt to duck responsibility. However, he should realize that such conduct towards other people is also a form of unconscious self-loathing. If he continues to behave in such a way, he is exposing himself to the same lack of sincerity from his partners.

YAKI has a structured mind and penetrating intelligence, but his thought processes may tend to be somewhat plodding. This slow pace may be the consequence of some failure or humiliation during his formative years. He is fairly inhibited and pessimistic, and tends to doubt in himself and his intellectual skills despite his undeniable gifts as a thinker. He should become aware that his thought patterns and habits are the sign that he is on the brink of a really big breakthrough which will give him an understanding of the complexity of things and phenomena; however, it will take time and effort. His mind is deep and accurate, and is attracted by the essence of things and their fundamental structure. As a result, he is particularly suited to the study of mathematics, architecture, engineering, or perhaps even politics. His contribution to society will probably be most lasting and effective in the field of knowledge and expertise. Whatever career he chooses, he should learn to work alone, because he tends to be uncomfortable in some surroundings. He will also have to learn to conquer his impatience, because he tends to waste time agonizing over deadlines and schedules. Moreover, his lack of self-confidence causes him to be fairly conventional and respectful of time-honored ways. Instead, he should find the courage to question his convictions and those of his social class.

Energy and Ability to take Action:

YAKI is likely to mobilize his energy for all sorts of purposes, as long as they are modern, intellectually exciting, untried, or innovative. Once his will is aroused, it can be immense, and it will hang onto a goal until it is achieved. Paradoxically, despite the fact that his ideals are usually spiritual or high-minded, he tends to be somewhat intolerant and even passionate in his private relationships... as if the strength of his convictions and personal commitment obscured certain subtleties and made any compromise unthinkable.

The man born under this sign will have a strong ambition to succeed in his career and enjoy professional prestige. He is dynamic and enthusiastic, but sometimes behaves impulsively and makes mistakes in judgment. Convinced his own ideas must be implemented, and always mindful of his career plans, he does not always take the time to analyze the full complexity of every situation. He may tend to aim too high or mismatch the scope of his means and his purpose. He tends to show off and overestimate himself, and seeks out competition and confrontation as a means of reassuring himself about his individual aptitudes. This attitude may be a source of friction with others which will do disservice to his career ambitions. As the victim of his own boasting, he sometimes finds himself in situations which are over his head. He should realize that his hastiness and behavioral flaws will discredit him and harm his image in the eyes of those he needs most in order to succeed. If he buckles down and prepares seriously for action, his anxiety should disappear, and he will behave in a way which is wiser and more appropriate to the legal and social context.

YAKI has good control over his energy, and knows how to budget his vigor and effort to yield the most benefit. His emotional outbursts are usually mild; his forethought and reflection usually balance and temper them well. He is circumspect and cautious, preferring to analyze a situation and develop a strategy before taking action. Nevertheless, in certain specific situations, he may find himself paralyzed and unable to take action; at other times, he may be ruled by the opposite tendency, and intervene in an erratic, impulsive way. As for the other realms of YAKI's life, he has supreme control over his energy. This is a source of his sense of economy and effectiveness, which should guarantee him a successful career. Moreover, although his desires and needs are fairly restrained and limited, if they ever happen to be frustrated, it will have a difficult impact on him.

Dominant Astrological Characteristics

Jupiter is the first dominant in YAKI's astral chart. In the following paragraph, we shall indicate the significance of this fact:

In traditional astrology, Jupiter has always been considered as the Great Benefactor, the planet of luck and success such as personal fortune, social prominence, professional prestige, high political position... The Jupiterian bounty is peerless! In psychological terms, this planet has a much vaster significance. As the biggest planet in the solar system, it does preside over the process of personal expansion, interpreted to be fitting into society better and finding an appropriate match between one's individual ambitions and the aspirations of the group. These growth is accompanied by a feeling of self-confidence, which, in turn, buoys up an even greater externalization and expansion of the ego. Hence the planet's flattering reputation. But this snowball effect (Jupiter smiles and the world smiles with him), in which social skills magnify confidence and boldness reaps many rewards, betrays the negative side of Jupiter: extreme and excess. Although grandeur was the characteristic of the " king of the gods ", errors of judgment, poor taste, and sometimes selfishness and pride are also likely to be part of the Jupiterian package. It is important to note that the extension of the ego may be a form of escape; it is tempting to hide behind one's popularity and social success, which are fairly easy to obtain, rather than be really demanding with oneself. The Jupiterian has a tendency to amplify his qualities out of compensation, to avoid seeing his weaknesses and flaws. As a result, he must be aware of the risk of over identifying with his social mask, which would cause him to neglect his inner self and deep nature.

The Sun is the second dominant in YAKI's astral chart. In the following paragraph, we shall indicate the significance of this fact:

As the heart of the solar system and the gravitational center of the travels of the Earth and the other planets, the Sun is the primordial Light, the source of all warmth and life. From the dawn of humanity, it has been worshiped: it has symbolized the absolute power kings and despots yearn for and emulate. The Sun-King, the nucleus of society, embodied a principle of cohesion and harmony. Various subordinates - his planets - revolved around him. In terms of psychological symbolism, the Sun corresponds to the center of an individual, the factor that rules his psyche. Its luminous aspects are usually associated with knowledge and consciousness. As a creator of life, it is related to the image of the Father and the influence of fatherhood on an individual's consciousness and ideals. As a result, the Sun's position in a birth chart always indicates the way in which an individual will relate to his goals and ideals: what his ambitions and aspirations might involve. A person whose chart is strongly " solar " usually identifies very positively with fatherhood. His personality is friendly, energetic, and creative, with high ideals and a firm determination to accomplish them. He takes his own superiority and authority over others for granted, and he has a natural ability to command the attention and admiration of an audience. He is a born leader, who enjoys being in the limelight, and may behave somewhat theatrically or with dramatic exaggeration. He has definite artistic leanings (although he is not always " tasteful "). The sense of his ideals is evident to him and may lead him to be somewhat arrogant and even despotic towards his friends. If ill-directed, his deep aspirations may lead to such faults as egotism, selfishness, or greediness for power.

Neptune is the third dominant in YAKI's astral chart. In the following paragraph, we shall indicate the significance of this fact:

This planet is the quintessential symbol of individual receptivity and the fundamental reactions of the unconscious, including the collective unconscious. Opposed to Saturn, which is the principle of form, structure, and limitation, Neptune is a principle of dissolution. It concerns any effort to encompass the greatest variety of factors, any tendency to surround and blend all the narrow, individual points of view into a single, universal sea. Psychologically, the Neptunian effect is expressed as an exceptional psychic flexibility and extreme pliancy. YAKI thus displays considerable receptivity, and availability. He feels a need for unity, a need to be related: he is also deeply aware of the importance of dreaming, and, negatively, may be prone to delusions. At certain times, YAKI is overwhelmed by a feeling of subtle confusion related to a need for " something else . " When his well-being is disturbed this way, he either yields to a sort of passive, apathetic dissatisfaction, or loses himself in the search for an imaginary world, perhaps to escape or plunge into bliss. He is sometimes captivated by a need for illusion; he would like to experience change through the intermediary of events which are vaster than consciousness and would take him far from routine and daily banality. Nevertheless, usually these fantastic dreams only make him all the more painfully aware of the realities of earthly life. His spirit and emotions emerge confused, and his will is sometimes weakened.

The Ninth House is an area of the sky which is especially important in YAKI's theme. In the following paragraph, we shall explain the general meaning of this fact.

According to traditional astrology, this area is ruled by Sagittarius, the ninth sign of the zodiac. Its chief attributes are moral and political judgment (laws, ethics, and politics as a means of improving society), dreams, distant journeys, studies such as religion, philosophy, priesthood, spiritual guidance, and wisdom. More specifically, we can interpret astrology as demonstrating that the life and consciousness of an individual gravitate around two fundamental principles: the Self (the Ascendant) and Others (the Descendant). In life, everything begins in us and proceeds outward, but it is reflected, experienced, and renewed by our relations with others. Indeed, once the individual grows beyond the subjective field of his ego and reaches adulthood, he must be able to adapt and modify his abilities in such a way as to fulfill a specific function in the outer world. The reference framework he uses to judge his worth is not only his personal life, but the huge complex of values, principles, and laws which regulate life in a community. The Ninth House rules this much broader framework, which includes law as well as philosophy, psychology, science, religion, mysticism, occult studies, etc. An individual with a great deal of activity in this area of his astrological chart will probably feel a strong desire for personal expansion. An idealist, he will seek out experiences which reveal knowledge and meaning to him, and give him a better indication of his purpose in living. The difficulties he is likely to face will be hidden behind what appears to be success. They may arise from his expansiveness, which is sometimes uncontrollable, or disproportionate. Although at the outset, his ambition and desire for personal development are a source of strength, they later become powerful enough to cut him off from himself. If he identifies too strongly with the flattering self-image reflected by the community, he may gradually begin to neglect his personal essence. Because this perverse tendency to confuse form with function is reinforced by modern society's emphasis on packaging and advertising, he is liable to lose himself completely. A state of expansion could be expressed as a psychic inflation (a loss of oneself in an abstract ideal, or a delusion of grandeur) or as a partial loss of himself due to over identification with his personal mask (or persona). This House thus reveals that nothing is more difficult than failure in a period of success: ambition, which may be a compensatory personal over evaluation, sometimes transforms understanding, a principle of cohesion and love, into personal power.

The Fourth House is an area of the sky which is especially important in YAKI's theme, because it contains several planets, including the one which rules his Rising Sign. In the following paragraph, we shall explain the general meaning of this fact.

Traditionally, this house is associated with the home, family, inheritance, cultural heritage, traditions, the dwelling, the native land, etc. The South Node, one boundary of the Fourth House, corresponds to the vertical line connecting the Zenith to the Nadir. The polar opposite of the North Node, the highest point on the map of the sky, the South Node is the lowest and, as a result, symbolizes the individual's past; his foundation, sources, and inner self. Within the inner self, in the intimacy of the memory and the unconscious, the individual's family and ancestral past dwell concealed, mingled with the roots of his future development. Psychoanalytic theory demonstrates that an individual's future is determined by early childhood experiences. Astrology does not contradict this assumption, when it points to the Fourth House as the basis of any social or spiritual growth. The fact that this area is significant in YAKI's chart means that he is seeking his personal center. He sometimes experiences a feeling of insecurity which inspires him to establish a stable foundation for his life. As a result, he may be reluctant to leave behind the psychic and material pattern he inherited from his biological family and lineage. Certain important crises in his life may be related to this emergence, this construction of a new home in the here-and-now. If he is able to perceive the hidden bond between his reluctance to assert himself as an individual and his roots in his family's past, he will be able to attain true stability.

Synthesis and Advice

Many people mistakenly believe that astrology is too deterministic. However, as even the ancients said, " The stars incline but do not determine. " In fact, the astral chart is evidence that each of us is accountable only to himself for his life and his destiny. Neither Heaven nor the occasional Hell of human contacts can be held responsible for the situation down here on Earth. Astrology shows us that life is what we make of it: all we really obtain is what we decide to accomplish ourselves, of our own volition.

If YAKI really wants to improve and transform himself, the first step is to become aware of the weaknesses which may be holding him back and preventing his evolution:
- His need to bluff
- His idealism
- His inability to manage certain things
- His instability
- His unwillingness to change certain opinions

As a young man, YAKI may feel out of phase with the social conventions and belief systems regulating his community, or the ethical codes he is supposed to follow. Although, like anyone, he wants to become a productive and valuable member of society, the models of success and achievement he sees around him don't particularly inspire him, for some reason. In order for him to find his own individual way to fit in, he will have to go through a period of long, hard introspection and self examination, if he has not done so already. This intense introspection will yield a new self-image, a new identity, and a new vision of the world. It will be a turning point in his way of participating in society. Possible opportunities for introspection include a major journey, or advanced studies, etc.

For YAKI, the main goal to aim for, in order to give purpose and meaning to his life, is to train his intellectual mechanisms to go from the specific to the general, and from the down-to-earth to the abstract. It might be necessary for him to broaden his consciousness, either by learning foreign languages and developing relationships with people from different cultures, studying philosophy or religion, or traveling. He must do so with the intention of opening himself up to a variety of cultures, art forms, and ways of thinking. If he remains at the level of collecting information and facts, he will never organize and weave the disparate threads of knowledge into a rich tapestry of wisdom.

Psychological Profile

YAKI sometimes lacks energy. He is fairly apathetic and passive, preferring sluggishness to movement, and leniency to initiative. The greater the ratio, the more exaggerated his tendency to laziness will be.

YAKI has a great deal of sang-froid; his inner calm and stolidity predispose him to tasks which require self-control and perseverance. He does not readily display his emotions, even in the most hair-raising situations.

YAKI feels, thinks, and acts as a function of objective circumstances. The outer world is the only one which counts for him, and his awareness is entirely focused on it. He is rarely moody or preoccupied, and may sometimes be wary of his subjectivity.

YAKI has a reactive personality, and his responses to various outer stimuli are strong and immediate, but generally brief.

It is sometimes difficult for YAKI to focus his concentration on a single subject; however, he is extremely open, and always tries to learn and integrate new information and new ideas. He is more cross-disciplinary than specialist, and his centers of interest are fairly widespread and varied.

YAKI's objectivity in perception and behavior could, in the best of cases, lead to generosity and altruism.

YAKI's fierce individualism will promote independent and original behavior. He tends to lack team spirit. On the contrary, he needs to feel free and untrammeled by others to be really effective.

YAKI is motivated by a thirst for power which gives him a certain authority. He has a feeling he is leadership material. However, he has a tendency to infringe on other people's freedom, and he may initiate troublesome power struggles.

Because he trusts in himself and his convictions, YAKI has personality and presence. He is quite sure of himself, and may tend to be rather smug and self-satisfied, although this does not eliminate his need for other people's approval and recognition.

Because he is often in a positive frame of mind, YAKI finds it easy to make decisions, and is only rarely hindered by negative feelings or anxiety. However, his optimism may lead him to overestimate his own potential, and makes him liable to misjudgment.

YAKI is chiefly interested in tangible facts and realistic details. A pragmatic personality, he never loses sight of the utilitarian or practical aspects of things.

YAKI's approach to life is usually methodical and disciplined: he plans out his projects, and organizes his schedule to yield maximum efficiency and effectiveness.

YAKI's thought processes are usually clear, orderly, and linear; his reasoning obeys the dictates of deductive or discursive logic, and relates to explicit goals.

YAKI's mind is especially perceptive of details. To arrive at a global perception, a vision of the whole, he proceeds gradually, piece by piece, aspect after aspect, in a fairly linear fashion.

YAKI is inclined to arrange, classify, sort, catalogue, and compartmentalize, in all his life activities as well as his work.

YAKI has the ability to set up a schedule for his work, and budget his efforts accordingly.

YAKI continually needs excitement and action. He is fairly fluctuating and faithless, and may abandon a project or commitment as soon as boredom sets in, to move on to a more exciting experience.

Rather emotive and hypersensitive, YAKI experience feelings with seismic intensity. His attractions are strong and immediate, and quickly develop into passions fueled by the full range of strong sensual thrills: from ecstasy to the agony of jealousy and possessiveness. He would be especially attracted to this type of woman. Passionate herself, she exudes a sexual aura which makes her extremely attractive.
