A LUPINE OATH

Sideview photo of a wolf looking into the distance

Do not fear, my black rabbit, I am alert
while you walk thru the thick meadows,
and while you sleep I am awake,
watching out for you.

The dawn shall come and I'll say unto you: Wake up,
the shadows of malevolence I have chased away from you.
I am your faithful companion in your weariest of days,
a fierce guardian lying by your burrow while you sleep.

I shall warn you of nocturnal enemies,
of possible betrayal by friends and the approach
of rabid wolves who are praying I'm fast asleep,
to simply snatch you from your burrow, to annihilate you.

But if death comes to claim me one day,
and I leave this Earth with a small whimper.
I shall also warn you.. You will know.
But for now simply fall asleep and rest.
