THE SWEET HEREAFTER

There has been much of a hullabaloo about this movie from Canadian Director Atom Egoyan. Did well at Cannes and the Toronto International Film Festival. Apparently everyone is loving it. Well this li'l boy is saying "I don't think so."
I liked it but I did not love it. I left the theatre feeling...well...complacent towards the plight of the victims. The performances were great all around. The music was well integrated. The actual bus crash was filmed with such simplicity and understatement that you clench every part of your body in horror. See that's the funny thing about this movie...the more I talk about it I can almost convince myself that I did love it and all I needed was a little time to digest it. HMMM!? Swamp land anyone? In the department store of life, memory has this precocious and devilish way of making its way to the cosmetics counter before it lets you actually recall an event.
My difficulty with this movie is, there are too many storylines to follow for a two hour sitting. I felt like I watched four thirty minute films on the same topic. Now this ensemble cast method with multiple leads and stories is my own personal beef. I dislike the style. I had the same problem with THE ENGLISH PATIENT by the way. And the playing with time...is this the past or the present?
In the end I think the movie is definitely worth seeing. Even on an $8.50(cdn) ticket.

more movie verbosity!
