Sleep With A Porcupine
Dateline: San Francisco, August 7, 1987
Former Penn State Quarterback, Matt Rivers, announced his candidacy for the upcoming mayoral race today. Rivers, one of the city's most well known gay activists, is currently chairman of the Human Rights Commission. He was appointed by Mayor Bell two years ago and quickly became it's de facto leader, formally elected to the chair this year.
Rivers and his business partner, Walter Johnston, own and operate the largest west coast advertising agency located in the bay area, WM Associates.
They pioneered with their agency, servicing the gay community, beginning with a client base of several gay oriented publications and a handful of local gay-owned businesses.
WM Associates now has an international clientele. Their growth began in 1982 following an impressive string of award winning local print and television advertising campaigns. They gained national attention and started amassing national awards in 1984.
"I just want to serve this city, because I love this city," was the message Rivers gave when he announced his plans to run for office. The press conference was held in the central plaza of the office complex housing the agency.
The partners, seldom seen apart, also own this impressive group of high rise buildings called the Kings and Queen Center.
