“Message
from the SILK Management Committee.”
Welcome
to the SILK web site.
SILK
has come to its first year. It is indeed encouraging to know that we are
a viable organization within the community and are fulfilling our objectives.
“From small things, big
things grow” as they say. Our membership has swelled within the past year
from the fifteen or so men who continued to keep in touch after the workshop,
to a mailing list of about 30 members - all of whom touch base with SILK
on a semi-regular basis.
Our members come from
diverse backgrounds. And we are truly a multicultural organization. That
is no surprise considering the many races, ethnicities, nationalities and
cultures which are grouped under the general category of “Asian”. Nor should
we be surprised since gay men come from all walks of life - and thus bring
with them a multitude of experiences and skills. If each of us were a thread
of a certain colour, imagine the rich tapestry that is formed by our coming
together.
SILK
treasures the stories which each of our members bring with them. We do
not judge and say that there is only one way of doing things or of
looking at the world. What we do, is to seek to give each of our members
the information and the confidence to make our own decisions so that we
can fulfil our individual goals, dreams and desires - whatever they may
be!
Support does not end with
a SILK meeting. Informal gatherings of members occur; as we call each other
to go out for a meal, share a drink, catch a movie, visit a club and so
on.
Also we continue to pursue
our aims in making the community more aware of our cultures as gay and
Asian men. We co-operate with other groups to establish a truly multicultural
community where our uniqueness is respected and valued. The dream of acceptance
and equality is not “somewhere over the rainbow, way up high”. It is possible
and achievable!
Within these pages, you
will find a statement of our aims and objectives, and the framework of
SILK’s organization. You will also find links to other sites which provide
information which may be relevant to you, or just sites which show that
you are not alone - there are other gay Asian men with similar experiences
and who understand some of the things which you may feel roiling about
within you.
We are here. A brotherhood
of gay Asian men. All across the nation and all across the world. And coming
together, we can make a difference.

LETTERS
The management committee of SILK would like to
take this opportunity to address a few points, in responding to Dr Ong’s
letter “Internalized Racism” (Brother Sister, 18/9/97).
1. Mr Voon, as an individual, has a right to express his
personal opinion about the type of men he prefers.
2. SILK was established to promote the positive image
of gay Asian men and
to foster a better understanding and working relationship
between the non-Asian gay community and the gay Asian community.
3. SILK is strongly against any form of racism, and
any form of discrimination. Our work is to emphasize education, co-operation
and the exchange of information. This will enhance diversity and strengthen
community unity.
4. We provide information, support and advocacy for
our members to help them to work towards self-determination.
5. SILK is a non-profit organization run by gay Asian
men to support gay Asian men.
SILK cordially invites all those interested to attend
our meeting on Saturday, October 18, 5 pm at a venue to be advertised closer
to the date.
