Besides a hubby and a baby, my house is shared with several fuzzy, affectionate critters. Friends swear I am trying to open a petting zoo of some kind.
The companions of longest standing are my 3 ferrets who are vital to keeping the level of chaos in our household to a high standard. The biggest is Socrates a.k.a.Socks (a big fat sable male). We got him when he was 2 from a pet store who had him returned from his previous home. He is now the ripe old age of four and runs the ferret condo. His long time concubine is Galileo, a petite biege and cinamon female, who keeps fat Socks in line. She's two and is the ultimate explorer, getting into the LAST place you want her. And finally, Pitoune, who is five, was recieved from my brother-in-law after he aquired a large dog who wanted to eat her! She's a sleek silver babe who has no problem defending herself from our dog.
Speaking of dogs, Gibson, our chocolate Labrador Retriever, is the pretty boy of the bunch. We had him move in with us when he was 9 months old and his previous people couldn't handle him any more. Turns out he's a sweetie when you teach him to crap OUTSIDE and not jump up on the table to eat! And now, at two, he is starting to settle down and be a good companion. He is also referred to as Gibbers, Pretty Boy, and Big Mean Dog.
Finally, the illustrious Columbus D. Cat, our two year old tabby. We adopted him from a shelter when he was a wee barn. He has to be the most people dependant cat I have ever seen. He watches us leave from the front window and is the first to greet us at the door when we come home. He has earned the names Kung-Fu Kitty and Sucky Baby since he's lived with us. Since we've moved to the country he's become a mouser of high caliber.
All five of my buddies play together, the cat hunting the ferrets(and vice-versa) & the dog tormenting the cat whilst being assaulted by ferrets. It's really entertaining. Mostly, I think our home feels most alive when all this activity is about.
