I started doing this diary in June. If you haven't been following have a look at the Cast of Characters which gives a quick
low down on the essential day to day characters who are mentioned here...it will make more sense if you do.
Last night went a bit later than it was meant to. Just as I was shutting everything down I heard the whizz of a car going by at the kind of speed which could only mean one thing - that the rally was on. This happens every year and goes on for a few hours in the middle of the night. I knew I wasn't going to sleep with that going on - every time one went past I'd think "Ohmigod, that's so dangerous", and its especially dangerous right now when the hedges have just been cut and there's not only wet slippery leaves everywhere but bits of blackthorn and one of those thorns can puncture a landrover tyre never mind a crappy remould on a racing banger. So I just had a long bath and read for ages and got to sleep just before the dawn chorus. I had let Tommy the tom cat stay in overnight because of the rally, I don't usually trust him to stay in, unlike Kitty. Anyway I wish I hadn't, he was clawing and nesting all over the bed all morning, he shoved my head right off the pillow and I finally had to get up when I heard the unmistakable sounds of a cat doing the cat vomit thing and then I discovered that he'd been at the bread again. He soon ended up outside.
The sun was out and there was no rain and so I quickly headed up to the field with my new pitchfork to start on moving the hay pile. I knew I at least had to move enough to leave 6 feet of space for the new fence but thought I could easily do a lot more than that. The first problem was that the pitcchfork kept slipping round in my clamp despite having locked it up as tight as I could with the pipe wrench and I had to go back to the barn and wrap a bit of carpet round it. It held for a while and then started to slip again so I went back to the barn and brought the pipe wrench out so that I could tighten it up periodically. Well, that helped a bit but I hadn't bargained on how quickly the hay would have started to rot down and beneath a surface layer of light dry hay was great heavy clumps of wet, spore filled half rotted steaming hay. Some of the clumps took all my strength to lift up and over the fence and it was quite a big struggle to even clear the 6 feet that I needed. The telltale pain in the left shoulder has started already.
After a while I decided that enough was enough or maybe enough had already been too much actually and came in to light the fire and get back to the WIT website. There was a message from Clare on the machine to say she would be round in an hour, but not why. When she arrived I was deep in puzzlement about my rollovers and couldn't really give her full attention until I had solved the problem so she went out and groomed the horses. She had come round to make a cover for the videocase for the film. (sneak preview - front cover only to the right). We spent a while looking through the screenshots I had grabbed from the video and selected a few to use. We had a break for dinner then finished it and printed it up and stuck it onto the videocase and although the colour needs correcting and the resolution isn't great the overall effect is good. |
Once Clare had left I got straight back to WIT and got everything sorted out as best I could with what little material I have. I do now at least have ideas about what else to add but just wanted to get something up and running. So please pay a visit to WitWeb and if you think it's crap or if you think it's not completely crap or have anything to say on the matter let me know because I could use some feedback.
