Bluehook's Diary

I started doing this diary in June. If you haven't been following have a look at the Cast of Characters which gives a quick low down on the essential day to day characters who are mentioned here...it will make more sense if you do.

The house seemed ever so quiet when I woke up this morning, especially since the decorating was meant to have started "first thing". On my way round to the field with hay for the horses I stopped off at the other end of the house to pick up some item of clothing I'd shed there the previous night just in time to see Irene waking up to a phone call. It was Lorna, broken down up at Stag's Head garage. Rather than let Lorna sit there while Irene went through the procedure of waking up I just went off and got her, I don't know how long she'd been there but she practically had the tow rope round my tow bar before I could get out and remind her that we were facing the wrong direction.
Back home we had a quick consultation about where we were at with beginning this decorating job and I decided to go off into town and buy a new light fitting and some easy cook food food dinner while Irene and Lorna shifted furniture out and started the clearing process. I was allowing myself to begin panicing about this, I'd just phoned Clare and told her she could spread the word about the party, since we hadn't been sure whether we were going to have one until this morning. That means the job has to get finished by Thursday and, well, if nothing untoward happens that is still possible. It's just that I expect the untoward to happen, I have to try and pretend that it might not.
The first thing I did back home was take down the rack of spotlights which had been fitted in place of the flourescent tube but hadn't been that popular and get the new, standard, hanging lamp holder fitted. Lots of little wires to strip, shorten and reconnect and all of it above my head, the worst place to be working. Of course it didn't work the first time, it never works the first time. But I think this time I really have to blame the wiring diagram. I've never seen anything quite so nonsensical, I'd like to scan it and show it to you but I still can't do this because of some techno incompetence between Abel Internet and British Telecom. (But I'll not get into that again.)
After that the preparations started in earnest with Lorna and Irene washing down the walls while I got on with the polyfiller and the masking. Somehow dinner managed to get cooked while that was going on and we ate around the same table but in a different room, which all seemed rather strange. While we'd been decorating the kids had been doing the Christmas Tree and this carried on after dinner as well. The tree now has lights, an angel (albeit a somewhat disembowelled one), tinsel, baubles, the works. I've hurt my shoulder doing all that overhead wiring and Irene gave me a bit of a massage after dinner which I followed with a bath but it's not good. Tomorrow I have Heather coming round to redo a WIT application form, the last time we did one of these it went on until 4.00am so it is not fortuitous that I have a sore shoulder. Not at all.
