I started doing this diary in June. If you haven't been following have a look at the Cast of Characters which gives a quick
low down on the essential day to day characters who are mentioned here...it will make more sense if you do.
I'm sleeping in the main house sitting room at the moment, having given my bed over to Mary. I never sleep well in a strange place but I though I would since I had so little sleep the previous night. However, I was still awake when everybody started getting up. I wouldn't hear them normally as my own bedroom is on a different staircase and right down the other end of the house. But sleeping... or trying to sleep, where I was, I heard every creak of every floorboard, every door open and bang shut, every alarm clock, every kettle being filled. Hansi, not realising I was sleeping in there, came through the room to go for a shower in my end of the house and I think I was somewhat grumpy with her. At that point I looked at my watch and it was not even 7.00am. The house did return to quiet once the kids had gone off to school and I got a couple of hours of sleep. I was in a way bad mood by the time I got up.
After a suitable amount of coffee I did mellow out a bit and Mary got me involved in measuring curtains because I need to order some and we had decided to go to Aberystwyth. She's very good like that, if I just mention that I always forget to measure the curtains before I go there she will remember and get me doing it. She also very good at dealing with recalcitrant plants and was cutting back all my straggly and overgrown houseplants while I went for a bath.
By the time we got to Aberystwyth it was lunchtime so we went off to The Treehouse, I know, I always go to the same restraunt, but the food is good, its almost all vegetarian and you can smoke. Suitably fuelled we hit the shops in search of the elusive "sheep in wellies" fridge magnets, amongst other things. We did not find the sheep but I did get some new shoelaces for my boots as the current pair is knotted in several different places and it's hard to find laces that are both long enough for boots and have a small enough end to push through the hole in my lace fixing gadgets. I was staggered by the price of made-to-order curtains. I wanted three sets of curtains and I would have ended up paying a few hundred quid. So I just ordered one pair of ready-mades in the nearest available size for my bedroom because that's where the dreadfull curtains are bothering me the most. Mary is now going to make me the other two sets of curtains, one for my next birthday, one for Christmas and that suits up both because I can never think of what I want for presents and she always has to try and wring something out of me or pester Ruth to try and find ideas. Once we had finished in town we drove off to the DIY store and bought some potting compost and bulbs and window boxes to plant them in. I've got a great big wide windowledge outside my window and Mary had decided that it would be lovely in the spring with bulbs coming out there. I daresay she's right, I just hadn't thought about it before. She also bought me a present of a new shower curtain and mat. She had a shower this morning and must have noticed that the curtain in there was even more revolting than the ones in the windows, as well as being somewhat mouldy at the bottom.
Almost as soon as we were home it was time to make the dinner, which was already destined to be very late. We stuffed a marrow which we had brought from Ruth's garden, and although it went down ok with the adults it was not at all popular with the kids. Oh well, can't please all of the people all of the time, can you. Do I say that a lot? I think I do.
I gave my Mother her first introduction to the Internet after dinner. We're going to the Centre for Alternative Technology tomorrow so I though I would show her their website. I'm not sure that she was particularly impressed. We also did a bit of a search to find out about laminated flooring. Well, you got to look something up, haven't you and that was just what we happened to have been talking about.
