I started doing this diary in June, it's quite new. If you haven't been following have a look at the Cast of Characters which gives a quick
low down on the essential day to day characters who are mentioned here...it will make more sense if you do.
Slept way too late again. Going for a record...nearly 2.00pm and that was only because Irene shouted up to me that Princess had got out of the field. Not a huge emergency, she wasn't loose, just broken into the orchard. Decided that she could stay there for a while. At least till I'd had my coffee and fags.
Realised then that the sun was out...blue sky, the works. The weather has been awful here, dreadful, wet and nasty so this was a big excitement. Thought it would be a good day to tackle the barbed wire problem. I don't know what it is with farmers and barbed wire but the damn stuff is everywhere. It surely can't be to keep the sheep in, they escape anyway and if its to keep the people out, well, either they just wan't to walk on the land in which case its stupid, or they want to do bad things in which case it wont stop them. Anyway, went out there with a load of tools and took the damn stuff out. This involved hammering a large screwdriver into the back of the staples then levering them out. The good thing about having a prosthetic is that you are in no danger of getting hurt if you miss with the hammer, so its easy to just give it a right old welly. Once all the wire was off the biggest problem then was how to remove the stuff. Its not easy to work with, one hand or two, and even if you bundle it all up carefully it soon gets very bulky and difficult to pick up. In the middle of all this realised that Nelly was somehow stuck to the fence. A closer inspection revealed that she had managed to get the bottom strand of fence wire wedged between her shoes and her hoof, and it was totally stuck. It took two of us to get her off, I was holding her foot up while Lorna cut the wire and pulled it out. Think that whole fence needs an overhaul, they've trambled it down at the bottom where they lean over to get the grass...which is, of course, greener on the other side of the fence. Apparently Princess has taken to lying down to reach under the electric fence, haven't actually seen her do it, but it seems the problem is that she always forgets and gives herself a shock when she gets back up. This is one very silly horse.
The dinner I cooked last night got eaten tonight so somebody got lucky, and I still had to do the washup. I don't like the rota anymore. But I'll not go into a sulk about it, well, I'll try not to. Actually we ate quite early tonight so that means I must have been on this computer for hours and hours...again. I'm wondering if this is a worse addiction than the futon one. Speaking of which, big effort tonight to go to bed at a sensible time. Well, at least before 2.00am. Hmmmmmmmm.......
