Definition of shaman from the dictionaries: A shaman is a person that is both a healer and priest within the community. A person that enters an altered state of consciousness to obtain information and knowledge that can be brought back to the original reality to be used. The word Shaman originates from a tribe in Siberia. Those definitions are very good beginnings, also how some people practice shamanism is as wide and varied and people on the planet. Often this is due to how one is trained. There are several cultures that use some for of substance to prepare or stimulate the altered state of consciousness. In my particular training I was taught that no substances could be used. As my instructor put it that sometimes a substance can create a wall around you so that you can not interact with anything in that other plain. For me that I show I function. I am not in any way trying to discount those people who’s believes and cultures use substances or other methods to achieve their altered state of consciousness. The best definition I can give is a religious belief system that comes from within often Goddess and/or Goddess and God oriented. There are many concepts and theories of where it started and how’s way is more accurate historically. I do believe that it does come from the pre-Christian invasion of Europe. It developed as those people grew into their societies from the very nature and environment from which they live. A Shamanic path can be a very lonely road at times. Partially because shaman are often solo practitioners. Also having this type of spirituality has caused no end of torment in my search for love in my life, at least with another human. This and the basic human need for community brought me back to my studies of Wicca, and being involved with some solo practitioners and several covens. One of the most meaningful relationships in my life came from the time when I studied with Moon Goddess Coven, even though I live more than a thousand miles from them now I will never forget the growth and experiences I received with them.So that is my spirituality.
