Old News But Noteworthy:

Rick Tate and Jasper Salach tied the knot on October 11, 1997. Rick and Jasper were the founder and formerly coordinated the Dover GLABT&Q Support Group until 2001. (Dee Hebert is now)

It was only a coincidence that the wedding date fell upon National Coming Out Day! The Unitarian Universalist Church in Portsmouth,NH, performed the Holy Union. In the eyes of the Church their Holy Union is legal and protected. In the eyes of New Hampshire's Laws their marriage is not recognized as legal.

As of 1998, sexual orientation was added to the states existing anti-discrimination laws in public accomodations (like restaurants and hotels), housing and employment. This law also includes protecting heterosexual people that may be discriminated against by a gay-owned business or a gay landlord discriminating against a straight couple. I am sad to admit this happens now and then. Private associations, property and religious conscience, businesses with fewer than six employees, and those who rent only one house or a small apartment building some how escaped the justice of this law. The law is only a beginning. We still have a long road ahead of us until we are treated like first class citizens. The day we have all of the "special" rights heterosexuals have is the day we will be first class citizens.
