at the moment i've got two projects in the pipeline, the first [and most important, to me, anyway.] is
the forthcoming album, painland [[grins] the reason this page got started in the first place :)...oh
that and the painland magic deck
the idea to do painland sort of came from two sources, the first was [tragically enough] magic itself. i wanted to do an album of songs that bore titles from the cards, but i never even got that far, since all
these other great titles began to float around in my head. i started by trying to write the instrumental for
the album, which i'd hoped to be kind of ambient and spacey, what i wound up with instead was half of a very
disco-ified instrumental piece with a very strong beat. what eventually tipped the scales to do the sort of album that i'm currently pursuing was the new depeche
mode album, ultra. for those of you who don't know depche mode's gentle, soft and idyllic era [music
for the masses...violator...ultra...] we're talking about very synth-oriented music with a very strong
[usually] keyboard built bass and very strong rythm sections, while the rest of the song [right hand, strings,
other instruments] were kind of spacey and in some cases incidental to the rest of the song. [witness sister of
night on the new depeche mode album.] another big influence on this album [at least lyrically] was the new u2 album, pop. i've always liked the way
that bono puts together god/father/jesus images with the rest of the song being built around ordinary, every
day things... the second source for this album [where the subtitle came from] was one of the roleplaying systems that i
enjoy quite a bit, that being vampire:the masquerade by white wolf publishers. they've got this entire series
of roleplaying systems which they call the worlds of darkness, i figured that if you could take the world of
darkness a little further it would literally be, the world of doubt.
once i had an idea of what to call the album i began to toy around with what to put onto the album. my first idea was to write a direct follow-up to the ep i'd just released, [the broken ep] but the trouble
with that was the fact that i was going backwards...i was going to be writing yet another scathing attack on
my priest and the catholic church [if you don't know what i'm referring to, it's best that you go and have a
look at the bio [intro to sanctified]
not wanting to go backward, i decided that i'd start from scratch and see what ideas i could chain to the
title. late one night, while working on the first song for the album [at that stage i was just writing and
musing] i realised what i could do. i could write about where pain came from, the places and people that
inflicted pain on the people around me. as of this writing i've got the entire b-side written, and most of the a-side. [eight of the proposed twelve
songs] it doesn't proport to be a ground-breaking album, [most of the music/lyrics are very substandard, at
best] but it does look like a decent album, with, for a change, a relaxed and measured pace. [granted, almost every song runs into seven minutes, but we won't tell anyone ;)] here follows the most current tracklist: [grins] i might take off the cover versions, but i'm not sure yet. as far as my writing goes, i'm busy working on two new novels, but i'm not sure
about either of them, both have very similar elements built around very different
plots. my first written foray for a while [apart from the short stories this year] was
to be called trapped. the central theme of trapped is humanity and how it can be
degraded by various means. the two main characters are tobias [a sort of bizarre central figure] and
michael. both of whom are bisexual. the novel takes off when tobias winds up
on michael's doorstep one evening and then runs for the next nine months [and a
little bit] as mary-anne [michael's wife] has her baby. of course it's nothing neat and simple as that, since tobias happens to be a
vampire who is trying to become human again, mary-anne and michael are sort of
the people who come inbetween him and his humanity. the second novel for this year is called beyond the veil, which traces it's
central character, christopher hope, beyond a place known as the veil [sort of
a modernised purgatory] and back into the real world where he is following his
charge [wynn - also a vampire] whose sole mission is to turn the living world
into an extension of the veil. christopher's only hope lies with an earthside man named felix michaels who
explains to the protagonist about the third world war, magic and the ruins of
the .net.
