Charlestown Beach

We crossed the sea lock
Descended stone
Crunched gravel beach
Until alone.

Out-cropped rock
Furnished seat
Away from weed-flies
Sat to eat.

Drank in calmed sea-break
And rain-dark sky
Lone black cormorant
Paddling by.

Urban excesses
Out of reach
We sit becalmed
On Charlestown beach.
