5 o'clock alone
1967

Five o'clock... alone.
Morning? Night?
Early? Late?
Who? What? Why?

Wandering,
watching,
wondering,
wishing.

Today's?
Tomorrow's?
Still? Already?
After? Before?

Today's are strange.
Tomorrow's are stranger;
for today's don't care
about tomorrow's.

Not so is it said of tomorrow's;
for tomorrow's is like today's
in a small but existing way,
and does not want to know,
he may be today's, tomorrow.

Footnote

I was very young when I wrote this. "Cabs, Cops, Cruisers" was a possible title. The idea that at 5:00 am, only taxis, police and night people hanging out were on the streets. As I was thinking about this, the first subway released squeaky clean day people on their way to work. I noticed the disdain in their eyes towards those who had chosen to live another way.

Today's refers to those for whom it's late (still up).

Tomorrow's refers to those for whom this is the beginning of a new day (just got up).
