Chapter 2

Thursday
Short black skirt and a rust-coloured top

Another busy day. I wore a short black skirt, a rust-coloured top and black tights and low-heeled shoes and returned to Doreen Fashions

A smart new summer suit for the office

Betty knew that I had been looking for a smart summer suit for the office and showed me one in blue brocade which was ideal and fitted well.

As it was a warmer day I kept the suit on and went to look for some shoes to wear with my Ascot outfit. A really attentive assistant at a branch of K Shoes helped me try on lots of shoes and I found just what I was looking for, a pair of low-heeled beige shoes with an open toe and matching shoulder bag. She asked me to send her photos of me wearing the dress and shoes on Ladies' Day.

My new hairstyle At Jasmin's, my hairdresser in Fulham
Next I went to Jasmin, my hairdresser in Fulham, who always likes to help me try new styles and to do my hair in a way to suit different outfits. She and her colleague Cielo are lovely ladies and have become close friends over the years that they have been doing my hair. I wanted something to go with a 50's style dress that I would be wearing that evening and was very happy with the result. As always, we chatted a lot about fashions, styles and other girlie topics. Two workman whistled at me as I walked back to my car, which I know is not politically correct but still made me feel good.
At the Philbeach Hotel Black and gold dress
I had arranged to have dinner at the Philbeach Hotel and go to the party with a young man called Russell, whom I had not met before. He turned out to be very tall and nice looking and we got on well. The party was arranged by Club Voile, the corset makers, and was held at the Rheingold Club off Oxford Street. The theme was 50's glamour and I wore a black and gold dress that I had had made for me by Ted's Corner in Victoria. It has a halter-neck, fitted bodice and full skirt over a bouffant petticoat. I wore gold high-heeled sandals with a matching clutch bag and my fur coat.
With Tania from Croatia With Caroline James
The evening was enjoyable, although there were less people than expected and not enough dancing. I met several friends, including Tania from Croatia and Caroline James, who is a sparkling blonde and great fun to be with.
