Adventure, fun, the outdoors!

Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs, Colorado

I totally love the outdoors and anything that gives me a natural high! If you knew me back in High School you would probably be like, yeah right! But since I have come to ISU my opportunities have vastly approved and my eyes have been opened even wider. The most influential would be the Outdoor Program through rec services (where i work). They offer many trips and classes/workshops to students, faculty, and anyone who wants to join. I was a coordinator for about a year... these pics are from my first trip to Mattheisen State Park which is 3 miles away from Starved Rock.

So, what fun stuff do I do?? Good question. Of course I like to phrase it in a Ferris Bueller kind of way; the question isn't what do I like to do, the question is what don't I like to do? As of right now I haven't really done all that much, at least relative to what I want to do...

Stuff I do now!

My Philosophy on the natural high...
i suppose i'll comment on why anyone would like to do anything in the outdoors... I would have to say that it's the way it makes you feel. You get to get away from everything and everyone. You take control and if you aren't the one in control, then mother nature is. Being in places that no one has been or where no one is at the time, can be one of the best things you ever experience. (From my personal experience.. Vernal Falls in Yosemite, ten billion people.. ok maybe only a couple hundred.. and a good mile or two hike round trip... ok, but the damn squirrels that everybody kept feeding got on my nerves... and then there were the people... but, bout 3,000 feet up and 5 more miles round trip farther lies Nevada falls... totally different experience... saw maybe 3 people on the hike and not a soul at the base! An hour at the foot of a 600 ft fall is soemthing to remember... goes to show, the more you put into soemthing, the more you get out of it!!) Ok then there is also the personal achievment thing... Since i climb and have also been diving (as in skydiving) people always ask which did u like better, had to be skydiving... and they are usually amazed when i say i get more of a rush from climbing... To some I think it is hard to understand.. but here's my explanation as best as it can be... Diving.. ok you put on a rig, fly up a few k and take a jump, very cool, but not very demanding- unless of course you hit a stationary object.. but that's another story :) so basically everyone and their brother can dive.. and over time can eventually become a great diver and do some awesome stuff, just takes practice and a little common sense. Climbing... everyone can climb, but not everyone can climb well or sensibly, which is similar to diving except that the hardest part of diving is getting out of the plane, whereas in climbing it's the whole thing. I take pride in how well i've improved (or my friends' improvement) as time goes on and we move up the ratings... when we impress fellow climbers with our footwork or technique, that's what makes it all worth it. The feeling of great achievment.. that and the fun 20 footers u take.. now there's a rush, not only are u hoping your belayer knows what in hell they are doing, but u are also hoping the rope, biners, and everything is setup right!! So I guess it is also the trust factor, having to trust someone else to save your life, just in case u push yourself further than you are capable... but then again isn't that what friends are for?

So basically the outdoors thing is just attitudinal... some people have a crappy time in the outdoors and soem have a the best times fo their lives there... it's all just up to you... You make it happen, and as the saying goes... Fear Nothing!
Rock Climbing & Bouldering

Climbing is my favorite thing to do inside or outside... These are the newest pics, but i have a site dedicated to
climbing... check it out!

Exploring

Yep that's me way back there... I love wandering off and just hopping round not knowing what I'll find next...

These kinda fit in here.. but not really... Kennie at Apple Canyon State Park... and Jackie, Staci, and I at Balance Rock in CO

Hiking

Whether it be spring, summer, fall, or winter (as you can see these pictures are definately not from the warmer seasons...) hiking kix!

Ice Climbing

When it is too cold to hop on the rock, or if by chance there happens to be ice on the rock you usually climb, grab a couple axes, strap on some crampons and you are all set! Some people love it, others don't. To some it is considered "too much work" but then again that's what makes it all worth it!

Skydiving

This pic is like on all my pages, but I still think it is cool... I am hoping/planning on jumping at least 2 more times b4 i leave... am also hoping to get some more pics of the chute and whatnot!:) so check back round springtime!!

Ice Skating

Ok, not a big sport for me or anything, but we find it fun... Here's joanie at the DU rink... we even had hockey skates on!:)

Skiing!

Yeah that's right, we ski in Illinois! May sound pathetic, but I would much rather learn here than be thrown onto a big mountain and run into a tree!:) For the most part we go skiing a few times a year almost exclusively at
Chestnut Mountain. We aren't the best skiers that ever lived, but we make do. We are hoping to try out boarding in a few weeks, so maybe pix will show up from that escapade! Then this spring break Jack and I will be heading to CO, to try out a big mountain for the first time, yikes! Wish us luck!

Wind Surfing

Greg windsurfs all the time off the coast in NY, I'm hoping to eventually get out there and have him show me how it's done!
